The Altai League is another EU emulation, but one that is far more political than economic. The rapid economic development of Central Asia at the beginning of the 21st century led to the formation of a trading bloc, and the politicization of the League was extraordinarily rapid. The presidents of the constituent republics, most of whom had exercised near-dictatorial power since the early twenty-first century, were able to create a system that allowed each of them to rule the League as a whole on a rotating basis. So far, the system has operated well, though during the War there was a popular uprising in Tajikistan and coups in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Since the 2040s the current group of presidents has adhered strictly to the rules of the system.
Altai citizens have few civil rights and a standard of living that is significantly below world averages. The gap between rich and poor in the Altai League is among the highest in the world.
Current issues are the status of Tajikistan, which is ethnically non-Altaic, but politically a part of the League; border disputes with China and Russia, and war reparations claims on Russia, which have so far not been acknowledged. Sporadic fighting still occurs from time to time between member states, but it is unorganized and tribally based.
