Good day Hal: I am Miguel Ocampo, a transfer freshman this year. I am writing to you to report about an incident that happened today, which unfortunately, I was a victim of. I was in my Physics class at Buchard 118 this morning, when my professor told me that I needed to go out since "someone was waiting for me." I immediately complied and stepped out of the classroom, and was surprised to find two campus policemen standing outside. I asked them what this was all about and they replied "You should know what this is all about!" I was dumbfounded by their arrogant reply. They led me to their car, which was parked outside of the building and brought me to their station. I really felt like I was being arrested, even though they said they did not want any trouble, they just wanted to talk. This is the first time in my entire life that I have been summoned by the police and I really felt humiliated by their action. When we arrived at the station , they immediately started asking questions as to where I was between 8:50 and 9:50 that morning. I told them that I was in the Babbio Center at 9:20, with my friends. I was surprised with all the questions that was being asked when they even haven't mentioned the reason why I was in their office. They told me that they received a complaint from Ms Pavluchak claiming that someone made prank calls to her using a local telephone line (I do not know what to call these phones, but they are the ones usually located near elevators for a quick call to Stevens extension numbers) at the Babbio center and left my name,cellphone and home numbers in her answering machine. After hearing their baseless accusations, I told them the following: 1) I do not know of any person by the name of Ms. Pavluchak 2) I left my house at 8:36 for my 40 minute train ride to hoboken from the riveredge train station. It then takes me around 10 minutes to get to Stevens. I could not have possibly made those calls. Secondly, 3) I was with my friends the whole time when I arrived at the Babbio Center at around 9:20. After I expressed my side, they still kept on pointing the blame at me because according to one officer (I forgot his name): "I ain't no voice expert, but I heard the tapes and IT WAS your voice." How could he have come to that quick conclusion without even presenting me with any evidence to prove the accusation? As far as I know, one is supposed to be held innocent until proven guilty, but that was not the case here. I went with them without any hesitation and now I was being accused of something I am not guilty of. I express my total disappointment in not getting my right to a due process. I feel that I was forced to admit something that I did not do since they assured me that doing this will end the case and a simple report would be filed. Being new to this kind of situation and due to nervousness, I made the admission just to end everything and get back to class. In view of this unfortunate incident, I would like to request that this matter be brought up and reviewed by authorized persons of the school. I want to know why my name was dragged into this, how that person who claims to be me, was able to gain access of my personal information. I want my name cleared of all these accussations because I feel VERY HUMULIATED by this whole incident. 3) I am proud to say that I am a disclplined person and never in my whole life have I thought of doiing such a thing. 4) Isn't it strange that a prank caller LEAVES his contact information afte making that call? Being a new immigrant (I just arrived last May 2006) and especially a transfer student here at Stevens, I expected my new life here to be fun and stress free (classes exempt, of course). However, this incident has caused me much stress throughout the day and may have affected my Physics quiz I took later on that afternoon. I just want to point out that it is wrong to make someone admit something they did not do in the first place. I do not know if this is really the standard procedure that the Campus police does, but I felt like I was being questioned not as a Stevens student, but as an outsider. Furthermore, I felt embarassed when I was asked to leave my Physics class. This experience has been very traumatic for me. I am also asking for you to help clean my name at the campus police records and find out who is behind these prank calls. I am appealing to you and asking for your help as an honest student, who expects nothing but the best of Stevens education and to prevent further situations from happening again.
