Bill Dees Singer and Composer

Bill Dees isn't just a songwriter he sang those wonderful harmonies that you can hear on Oh Pretty Woman   Say You're My Girl  Only With You.
On Yo Te Amo Maria they actually switched roles on the chorus with Bill Singing lead and Roy harmonising.

Bill also toured with Roy in the 1960's and it was Bill who thought up the name of Roy's then backing band The Candymen. Bill played the keyboards for Roy and you can easily spot him on the Combo Concert Video.

Bill was also Roy's best friend and confidente - becoming Best Man at the re-marriage of Roy and Claudette and later when he married Barbara. He was also a pall bearer at the two funerals of Claudette and their two sons. In his own way Bill was there for Roy in those dark days/weeks/months following the tragedies as Roy struggled to come to terms with his terrible losses. It cannot have been an easy task trying to coax Roy back from the depths of despair, nothing and no one could replace them, the memories were all he had left apart from Wesley.

The song Barbara You're Not Bobby Anymore was written by Bill  It was written after their first writing association. Bill showed it to Roy and Barbara and Roy wanted to cut it but Barbara wanted to change Bobby to Barbie. Bill refused to change it so it was never cut  although Bill did demo it himself.

About the time of the 10th anniversary of Roy's passing in Dec 1998 Bill opened up a chatroom at Yahoo calling it CrazyBills and it is intended to enable him to chat with Roy's fans from all over the world. I was one of the very first to join it and am now one of the Founders of the club. We meet twice a week and have a really good time chatting and making new friends and contacts.

To join in the chats you have to become a member of the club first by going to http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/crazybillsplace

The following songs were also written by Roy and Bill Dees (There is a complete list of all songs written/co-written by Bill that Roy recorded in the A-Z section - these songs here were written but never recorded fully or released to the public, usually going to other artistes. It is assumed that some demo tapes that Roy may have made of these songs were probably erased by the recording companies who probably re-used them for other artistes. Roy often did his own demo tapes in his home studio using guitar as backing and there are some people who were close to Roy who would testify that there are hundreds of songs that Roy demo-ed that we have never heard. If the figures going around are true then it is possible that up to 50% of Roy's output has never been heard.

Sometimes Roy would demo them and usually they would be passed onto other artistes to record. I was fortunate to get hold of a demo tape of Blackie Dalton (probably their first collaboration) and Roy was
actually producing it for Bill who was the lead singer.

During the recording, Roy came in "cold" on the harmony side and there were a few notes that didn't quite make it - a fascinating insight of the World's Greatest Singer perfecting a new song. We only ever get to hear the end product toned to perfection and  don't always realise or appreciate the enormous efforts made to produce a 2-3 minute semi-operatic masterpiece.
