Beautiful Something
review by Allen Czelusniak
Lavish production, competent musicians and a big label push cannot save this band, or these songs, from lacking guts, substance and soul. The decline of alternative rock from its apex in the early 1990s continues even further as Mars Electric digs deep to resurrect the sound of Night Ranger and Nelson on Beautiful Something. Rich in vocal harmonies, cliche guitar riffs and cookie-cutter song constructions, the disc offers mindless sedation for light rock fans too stupid to know any better. Mars Electric effectively transforms Mick Jagger's rock'n'roll bull from a stud kicking in the stall all night into a placid steer going off to graze. Songs such as "Feels Like June" and "Your Light" typify Mars Electric's feather-heavy formula that masquerades as the real modern rock McCoy. Take a bullet before you leave the record store with this one.
