Carl Haviland was the only child of Mark and Ellen Haviland . Carl was born in Paradise Valley in 1870. Ellen, his Mom died in 1875 of scarlet fever. As a young man Carl worked as Vaquero on his Grandfather Palmers ranch and road the range. In time Carl started a freight business running supplies and equipment from Paradise Valley to Winnemucca.

Carl Haviland and Lilly Nicholas both of Winnemucca were wed. Carl Haviland and Miss Lilly Nicholas were united in matrimony by the Rev. M. G. Hamm at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Nicholas, of this place. Happy couple repaired to their residence on Lay Street, where the band was awaiting them.

The Paradise Stage LineThe Winnemucca-Paradise stage is run by C.E. Haviland and four horse are run on the Winnemucca end of the line as far north as Willow Point. Oscar McMillian handles the whip and pulls the leather over four as good horses as ever pulled a coach, and does it as gracefully as the old the old whips of the long ago used to handle the stock of the Pioneer Stage across the Sierras in the 60s. The Paradise end works but two horses, and Will Freemonth is in charge. Mr. Haviland does a good business hauling passengers and freight, and one can go to Paradise as easily as one can go in a fine carriage. The coaches ride easy, the stock is fresh and lively; but I will give the traveling public this pointer: Dont bet with drivers on the time they are making, for if you do you will surely have a bet to pay.

Moving into Winnemucca Carl went into business with Carl Hoskins where they opened a livery stable, freight office and warehouse. Carl expanded his business interest and had the first automobile stage line in the state.

Carl Haviland took delivery of his 80 Touring and drove straight for Winnemucca.

I can see it now, no pavement, no truck stops, no gas stations, what an adventure that must have been. My Grandmother Vera acquired a number of photos where the car was broke down or stuck. One picture just had the word trouble in the upper right corner.

In 1917 when Winnemucca incorporated Carl was elected the first Mayor of Winnemucca. In 1923 he ran for Mayor again and was twice elected to four year terms.
