On december 31, 1906, dorothy was born to Carl and Lillian Haviland in Winnemucca, Nevada, where she lived her entire life. She was the youngest of four children. She attened the local schools graduating from Humboldt County High School. After that she attended the University of Nevada in reno where she obtained a degree in education upon which she received a teaching job in Arden, Nevada. When she returned to Winnemucca a year later,she started teaching at the Winnemucca grammar school under Roger Corbitt and was there for five years before marrying Henry Eugene "Gene" Backus.

Gene and Dorothy owned and operated Haviland Chevrolet garage and service station for many years. Gene was active in public affairs serving a two year term as Mayor, several years as a Humboldt County Commisioner and a member of the Humboldt County School board. Dorothy changed her career from teacher to homemaker and mother to three children:vivian who passed away when she was two, Gloria and Dale "Butch".

She was a devoted member of Saint Mary's Episcopal Church serving as president for the ladies guild for a long time, and both she and gene were active in all aspects of the church. Gene was a member of the Winnemucca Masonic Lodge serving as worshipful master, and belonged to Kerak Shrine Club being elected to the local club as president. Dorothy loved a good game of bridge and whenever she could, got a foursome together to play. She belonged to a weekly bridge club; eight players-two tables. she also belonged to eastern star.

After retiring in 60's Gene and Dorothy purchased a summer home in Cascade, Idaho, where they spent a great deal of time. Gene fixed up the home besides fishing , boating and meeting new friends. they looked forward to when the children came up with the grandchildren: Sheri, Don, Mike, Demarah, Kim, Lana and Chad. They kept the Idaho vacation home until Gene's death.

in 1970 Gene passed away after being hospitalized in reno for only a day, and Dorothy followed him in 1979 after a lengthy illness. They both are buried in the Winnemucca cemetery alongside their late daughter, Vivian.
