January 2000

Here are the pictures from the big Winter Break tour of Guido and me in January 2000. We were visiting Florida, and also went to New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville. All in all, we spent 16 nights in 10 different motels and have been to about 20 states of the USA. It was really nice to escape the cold weather in New England for more than two weeks, and to go swimming in the ocean.

Some pictures

This is a one of the many park in Savannah, Georgia. Parts of the movie Forest Gump were shot here.
This is a former plantation in Georgia that is now a museum. The trees are incredible huge there, and some of them are about 500 years old.
Sunrise on Daytona Beach. This was a very famous place for Spring Break about 10 years ago. Nowadays, students fly to Bahamas or Cancun to spend their week off in March.
Around Orlando you can find Disney World (4 theme parks), Universal Studios (2 theme parks), and lots of other parks. It's the theme park capital of the world (forget about LA).
Cape Canaveral is where all of the US space missions start. This is the rocket park in the Kennedy Space Center.
Here's the famous Space Shuttle. It's fascinating to imagine to live there for several months.
The Everglades is a huge national park in the south-west of Florida. You can find a lot of birds, snakes, alligators, insects (during the summer), and different vegetation zones. Here's an alligator.
Lots of birds in the Everglades.
Parts of the Everglades are very wet.
Other parts of the Everglades are very dry.
You can find lots of vultures in the Everglades.
We are leaving the Everglades now. This is in St. Petersburg, Florida.
This is Miami Beach. The weather was not too good on that morning.
Miami Beach is famous for the Art Deco buildings.
We visited the police museum in Miami.
In the police museum you can see (among other things) all kind of weapons (like umbrellas with built-in knifes), crime scenes (like St. Valentine's Day Massacre by Al Capone), police motorcycles and vehicles, a prison cell, an electric chair, and a guillotine.
You may say that this picture taken on Singer Island looks pretty nice. Believe me, in reality it was just gorgeous.
This is the beach of Singer Island near West Palm Beach. It was the cleanest beach I have ever been to, and the weather was just great (temperatures in the eighties).
This is the beach of Key West, the most southern part of the US. Unfortunately it was polluted by the time we were there and it was strongly suggested not to take a bath.
This is Ernest Hemingway's house, located on Key West.
Fort Lauderdale is also called the Venice of America. You can get nearly everywhere by boat (even to the church). As a consequence, many rich people have their villas and yachts there.
Another villa in Fort Lauderdale.
Just in the center of Fort Lauderdale you can find the Bonnet House, a plantation house created by the artist Frederic Clay Bartlett.
The estate where the Bonnet House is located is 35 acres of land. Among other animals you can find monkeys. They live there without being fed by anyone.
This is (part of) the Coral Reef Chapel in Fort Lauderdale. Looks pretty nice at night.
Welcome to Memphis, Tennessee. There we visited Elvis Presley's Graceland.
One of the many rooms in the main building (Graceland, Memphis). It's a place where everyone would enjoy living, especially if you are used to Grad Dorm standards.
The grave where Elvis and his family are buried. Every year thousands of people send flowers, especially around the King's birthday and the day of his death.
Nice picture of the Mississippi in New Orleans. You can see the shadow of the building where this picture was taken from.
This is the Canal Street around dusk. To the right (behind the skyscrapers) there is the famous French Quarter (Vieux Carré) of New Orleans.
This picture was taken from a ferry at night. The cross-shaped skyscraper on the left is where the above two pictures were taken from.
This is Jeanne d'Arc, a gift from France. In the background you can see the market of New Orleans. It's a very traditional market, but nowadays the products sold there are mainly for tourists.
The Jackson Square is also known as Place d'Armes. In the next picture you can see the interior of the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral.
Inside the St. Louis Cathedral - the oldest cathedral of the US.
