dude ranch is a fantastic album, despite what many critics say.  the album is a world away from cheshire cat - from the first song the listener can detect a more refined sound from the band.  however, i love the raw sound of cheshire cat, dude ranch is definitely a more engineered sound.

the lyrical content of dude ranch is less emotionally explicit than that of cheshire cat.  the lyrics are less "meaningful", and the songs are a lot more jokey and superficial.  this is by no means a bad thing.  the album is a steady progression to the third album - enema - which is seen as "typical" blink-182 material.

my favourite song on this album is josie.  i am always a sucker for a good love song, and for those who don't like to search too deep for the meaning of a song, this is it.  josie is the closest you can get to the raw simplicity of the cheshire cat album - the song is very youthful and energetic, and its intent very obvious.

dammit was probably the biggest success off this album.  again, a "growing-up" song reflecting the youthful attitude that possessed the cheshire cat album - but the musical refinement of the dude ranch cd means that the song is more superficial. to sum it up, i thought, "why is he still singing about growing up when they sound too old for that now?"  the lovable and humourous nature of the band manage to carry this song off though, and it is another of my favourites.

go back home ~ back to the blink page ~ get me outta here!
