THE XJ-S QUICK FACTS GUIDE :
- Jaguar production from circa 1975 to 1996.
- XJ-S prototypes and models as early as 1971.
- This was the next generation model to the legendary E Type.
- The XJ-S was designed to be a coupe or "sports cruiser".
- The 5.3 V12 engine was not originally designed for the E Type unlike the
XJ-S.
- Chassis and suspension design derived from the XJ saloons.
- Virtually handbuilt car including bodyshell, suspension and engine. Weight
around 2 tons and a 20 gallon fuel tank !
XJ-S models and revisions can be divided into the following classes
:
1991 saw a subtle revision of the XJS design (name changed from XJ-S) with
Jaguar now under ownership of the Ford Motor Company a few years earlier.
The car now featured a galvanised steel body, fewer body panel pressings to
aid production costs. Main visual changes include a revised tailgate, rear lights,
rear quarter window trim and front bonnet grill. The 3.6 engine now changed
to the newer 4 litre AJ6.
- Facelift XJS Coupe and Convertible (5.3 auto, 4 litre AJ6 auto and manual)
: Circa 1991 to 1993
- Facelift XJS Coupe and Convertible (revised 4 litre AJ16 auto and manual)
: Circa 1994 to 1996
- Facelift XJS 6 litre Coupe and Convertible Factory model (revised 6 litre
V12 auto) : Circa 1993 to 1996
- Facelift special models include 6.0 XJR-S, 4 litre insignia special edition
and last model Celebration.
There have also been other non factory models including a Lynx Eventer (an
estate V12 car !), Lynx Spider (early convertible), a Guy Salmon Special Edition,
an XJS Barbie (pink) model and Paul Banham / Hyper Performance styled versions.
