Gen is a spy for the Muromachi Bafuku. He affects a reckless bravado, saying that he is only in it for the money (often the job pays very poorly) or only in it for the excitement (and in truth, Gen has lived a very exciting life). To most people he seems a cynical blade for hire. However, secretly Gen is devoted to his job. He grew up in Edo, and saw the city and his family destroyed during the clan wars. On some basic level, he understands the importance of his work as a hedge against instability and war. Gen has been fighting in one way or another all his life, and has never had the opportunity to pick up the finer arts - something he is sensitive about, but will hide under a rough jest about the uselessness of a classical education in a time of war.
In appearance, Gen is a muscular samurai, in his middle thirties. He habitually has a slight growth of beard and his usual outfit is shabby clothes (although when the situation demands it he can play the autocratic well-bred samurai).
