Osawa is a headman's son, even if his family has been poor for as long as they could remember. Osawa was a difficult child, forever arguing with his father and getting into trouble. When he was 15, he stole his father's swords and headed for the Nigata, the nearest city, intending to make something of his life. Instead, he ended up selling the swords and scraping by on odd jobs in a gambling den Eventually he found the only thing he had any aptitude for was killing people, and that is how he made his living - first for a crime boss, later as a blade for hire. He met Kura during the latter's travels about Japan, and has served him on several occasions, removing people Kura wanted dead. It was during the execution of these tasks that he recruited the group of assassins he now leads. However, he is the only one of the gang who has met Kura face to face - normally their instructions come by anonymous messengers.
The other assassins in the gang are Masu, Takaai, and Ujikiyo. Although they work well together and will take some risks for one another, they are by no means faithful comrades. If things go all to hell, they wil seek to escape rather than risk their lives to save one another.
Osawa is deeply bitter about the way his life has developed, and he has an especially nasty edge towards people who talk about duty or acceptance of karma. All duty ever got his family was condescension and poverty. Despite this, when fortune has been (for a short time) good, he has flashes of good-heartedness. At such times he is likely to be overly generous - especially towards people he sees as abused by the authorities, orphaned children, etc. He is also likely to be morose, talking about the bitter nature of life, etc. However, reminding him of this when he is in a more normal mood is likely to enrage him. And whatever the mood he is in, Osawa has nebver lost his conviction that the only person who ever cared for Osawa was Osawa. He never trusts anyone, and will kill or abandon even friends without hesitation.
In appearance, Osawa is of average height, but stocky and well muscled. While average in appearance with a round face and flat nose, he has sparkling eyes and a ready grin, that can change in an instant into scowling rage.
