Song / Interview

1. Read the song / interview carefully. Discuss your initial reactions.

2. Next, read the interview / song for word choice. Did you find any of the words we've studied? If not, where can you add a word or two (be specific)? (Do you know what words we've studied?) 

3. Next, read the song / interview carefully and try to decipher the gist of the novel. What do you think the novel is about? For your next independent reading, would you like to read this novel?

4. What do you think of the title of the piece? Does it make the writing seem appealing? If there is no title, what would you suggest?

5. If you're editing a song, do the lyrics seem "too cute" or forced? Does the writer find voice? Does the writer rhyme for the sake of rhyming? If rhyming is not a feature of the song--which, by the way, is perfectly fine--what other poetic device holds it together? Is this a song you would like to hear?

6. Writing questions for an interview is particularly difficult. Take a careful look at the questions for the interview. Are they about superficial matters or do they get to the heart of the book? Would you change, or perhaps reword, any of the questions? Would you like to be asked these questions?

7. Grammar & Usage: You all need to produce a gem.

First, let's tackle the song. Songs and poems must follow the rules of punctuation; this includes correct comma usage. Scan the poem for comma usage. Is it done appropriately? Are there any other areas of concern with the grammar? (Ask the teacher if you're not sure.)

Scan the interview for grammar and usage. All the rules of traditional prose apply.

8. Re-read the song / interview one more time. What are you closing remarks? Is there anything more you'd like to say?
