The Giver
Post Activity Discussion Questions

1. Think about how color or the absence of color was portrayed in the theatrical presentation of The Giver today.  How did the actors demonstrate that color was not seen?  If you were the director of the play, how would you have shown the absence of color?

2. IF the controversial topic of euthanasia was touched upon in the play, how was it handled and what is the effect on the audience to see such an act carried out in live theater?

3. Did the portrayals of the characters in the play (i.e. Jonas, The Giver, Asher, Jonas’s parents) match the perception you had of them while reading the book? If not, why? Be specific to support your answer.

4. In the book, The Giver, the ending is purposely ambiguous so the reader may interpret Jonas' fate in his or her own way.  This is what we call “author’s craft”.  How is Lowry’s craft reflected in the ending of the play?  Does the play’s ending have the same effect on you as an audience member as the book’s ending had on you as a reader?
