Jaco was the man who turned the bass from the backbone of the rhythm section into a possible lead instrument going where few had gone before him. Having started on bass because his bad arm prevented him from drumming at a gig, Jaco took this new challenge and ran with it. He was one of the first men to play fretless bass and shot to the top of the bass universe while playing for Weather Report where his pulsating basslines and dazzling solos impressed crowds of people. His solo band Word of Mouth toured the world and helped make Jaco arguably the greatest bass player ever. Jaco spiralled out of control through drink and drugs and was beaten to death by a bouncer while trying to break into a nightclub.
