| Notes: | First Speaker of the NSW Parliament Town of Fort Cooper named in 1865, remaned to Nebo in 1923- in Qld Mt Fort Cooper is a flat top mountain near Nebo Why is a town in Qld named after someone in MSW? Few modern day collectors are likely to know about the late Frederic Breitfuss of St. Petersburg, Russia. At one time, he was reputed to have the third largest collection in the world, ranking after Ferrary of Paris, and Tapling of London, and this was before the period that the Worthington collection had attained the position it had in later years when it was dispersed. Frederic Breitfuss was born on 16 September 1851, and commenced collecting stamps in 1865 while still in school. His collection took a great leap in 1872. Some French officers, on leaving Marseilles in 1870, to fight in the Franco-German war, had pawned their collections. Breitfuss bought several collections, which were sold in sealed boxes. The pawnbrokers refused to open the seals before selling the boxes. Breitfuss took the risk, but was rewarded with only one collection which turned out to be a real bargain. In December 1873 Breitfuss moved to London and stayed there for about two years. While there Dr. Viner persuaded him to join the London Philatelic Society (now The Royal Philatelic Society). While in London, Breitfuss met the leading collectors of the day, such as Judge Philbrick, V. de Ysasi, M. de Johannis, Sir D. Cooper and T. K. Tapling. Many interesting incidents happened to Breitfuss while he was in London. One of them was when, in 1874, Senf sent him the first copy he had ever seen of a circular Moldavia, the 27p. As the copy was not pretty, Breitfuss sent it to Sir Daniel Cooper for $12.50 and the latter accepted it. |
