1 Ancestor name: possibly Lemuel S. Bean
 Birth? Possibly Vermont
 Death?
May have been a judge. (family rumor)
Notes in searching for his and his family's origins:
There was a Lemuel Bean in Barnstable Massachusetts in 1754. He was
a subscriber to the Isham will. (Barnstable Co. Probate Registry
Vol. XII ) REf: Ishams in England and America by H.W. Brainard page
 120.
Vermont came into being as a state 4 March 1791. Prior to that it
was a border area disputed between New York and New Hampshire; hence
various documents might list persons as coming from Windsor, New
 Hampshire or even NY.
re: Vermont: 1761 migration into area from Connecticut; 1763-1784
 various Scotch-Irish settlements; 1770-1771 and 1775 Scotch-Irish
settlements in Windsor County. 1816 severe weather in winter and
summer caused much emigration out of state.
Re: New York: 1781 NY cedes her western territory to the United
States. Many Loyalists migrated to Canada during and after American
Revolution; 1812 (About) Many Vermonters migrate to the northern
counties of New York: Essex; Clinton, Franklin, St. Lawrence, and
 Jefferson.
There was a William Bean, head of family, in Windsor, VT in the 1790
 census: 3 sons, 3 daughters.

Census 1860, Bradford, Chickasaw, IA, shows that Richard was either
a Lawyer or a Sawyer (i.e. owned a saw mill). The handwriting is
hard to read. Typewritten report from Iowa State Archives shows
"Lawyer"; Pearl's notes show he was a lawyer and in 1830 worked for
the St. Lawance [sic] Co. New York, Wheatfield Township. Moved to
Ingham County, MI and returned to St. Lawance [sic] (i.e. St.
Lawrence). Moved to Iowa in late 1850's. Volume I of the Clan
MacBean in North America shows he owned a sawmill before the war.
Source not listed for the latter.
During the Civil War, Richard enlisted 22 Sep 1862 at Camp
Hendershot, Iowa The family story is that he was too old to enlist,
so he dyed his hair with walnut juice, lied about his age, and
enlisted anyway. He was in the 6th Cavalry, Company C, of the Iowa
Volunteers. He was discharged for disability (hip injury) 21 April
 1863 with rank of private.
