The Butterfly Effect
The Saga Continues…
The next morning she woke up anticipating Kerry’s next visit, she knew what she had to do and she felt like she was running out of time. As expected Weaver came through the door to talk to her again after locking the door behind her and slipping the key card into her pocket she took a seat next to Amber. She undid her hand restraints and finally Amber was able to sit up. She rubbed her eyes for a moment and then stretched a little enjoying the freedom that she had for a moment.
“How are you feeling today?” Kerry asked her the sedatives hadn’t completely worn off yet so her mind was still all over the place it could take up to 48 hours for the last does to leave her system. Amber looked at Weaver for a moment before pulling her into a passionate kiss.
“I’m sorry.” She said after she pulled away but before Weaver could answer back she punched her in the jaw hard enough to knock her out, “But you’ll thank me when Romano is still alive.” She undid her ankle restraints and grabbed the key card and the syringe with the sedative in it out of Weaver’s pocket. She left the room locking the door behind her and started to run down the hallway towards the ER. She had to find out who the last person to talk to Romano was on the day of the crash, that might just help her figure out what actions she had to prevent. She pushed the cap off of the syringe and jammed it into the security guards neck, the one that was patrolling at the end of the hall. She then removed his gun from the holster and continued on her path. She had no intention of actually hurting anyone but she knew that no one would take her seriously unless she had a gun.
She made it into the ER without anyone else trying to stop her and she stood at the front desk before holding up the gun in plain view of anyone who was around her. “On the day of the helicopter crash who was the last one here to talk to Romano?” She demanded before pointing the gun randomly at the people who were now staring at her. The staff looked back and fourth the ones who had talked to Romano on that day didn’t have the first clue as to if they were the first or last people to have conversed with him.
“Amber, put the gun down you don’t want to hurt anybody.” Dr. Lewis said from behind her and she turned swiftly pulling the woman to her and wrapping her arm around her neck before jamming the gun to her forehead.
“Like hell I don’t!” Amber yelled that’s about the time that Frank cleared his throat and started to speak up.
“Okay I last saw him before he went upstairs to the helicopter pad on the roof to return his watch to a patient just put the gun down.” Frank started to move towards her slowly and she knew that he was an ex cop, but she was a fifth degree black belt and she was certainly ready to take on an old man if she had to.
“What did you say to him?” She demanded.
“Why is that…”
“WHAT DID YOU SAY TO HIM FRANK!” Amber screamed before the poor guy could even get the rest of the question out of his mouth. She was dimly aware of Luka on one side of her getting ready to pounce and Carter on the other side, her years of self defense training taught her how to be aware of everything that was going on around her. She saw Carter’s hand drop on the left side of her and just as it did she stepped back pulling Lewis with her causing the two men to head butt each other and pass out on the floor. “I’m not playing games with you people here!”
“I…said that if he was too scared to do it himself then I would find some one else.” Frank replied shakily he was amazed that Amber was so aware of what was going on that she was able to side step an ambush. Amber growled slightly because anyone knew that would only encourage Romano into a proverbial pissing match.
“You truly disgust the hell out of my Frank.” Amber snapped as she started to pull a now struggling Susan towards the door of the ER. She was only in a rather short light green gown that only tied in the back exposing most of her ass to the rest of the world. There were nurses who were distracted trying to help Luka and Carter, and suddenly she turned and shot the gun hitting the phone in Abby’s hand causing it to shatter. Her hand was cut but nothing more serious then that she had just picked up a phone to call the police when she thought Amber wasn’t paying attention. “I hate you Abby…I hate you with every fiber of my being.”
“Amber can you please let me go now?” Susan begged as the grip around her throat got tighter Amber turned her head back to look at Susan before she started to drag her out of the ER again.
“Give me your car keys.”
“What?”
“DO YOU WANT ME TO SHOOT YOU?” Amber screamed, Lewis panicked slightly and pulled the keys out of her pocket and held them up for Amber to take, “What car is it?”
“The white one…” She motioned shakily to a car that was parked in the street just around the corner of the ambulance bay. She then tossed the keys away from her and Amber scrambled to pick them up she knew that old trick too well, to toss something away from the attacker when they asked for it so they would let you go. She didn’t give a damn because now she had a car and hopefully enough time to get away so the police couldn’t find her. She ran to the car and opened the door before starting it and slamming down on the gas, she had to think of a place to go where no one would think to look, a place she could hide for at least two days before the medication was out of her system and she could go back and fix time so that Romano could live. She figured if she could get back to before Frank even talked to him she would be able to stop him from going up onto the roof at all. All she had to go on now was a prayer but she wasn’t going to give up on saving an innocent man, not when she was so close.
She started towards her parents estate she knew that they were most likely in Tokyo and if they weren’t then she would still be welcomed, hell she could sneak into the guest house her parents never went back there anyway. By hiding there though she was going to have to park the car somewhere far from the house in the wrong direction and take a cab. She looked at the seat next to her, as luck would have it there was a clean set of scrubs and Susan’s purse. She knew that it was wrong to steal but if she fixed things then no one would even remember this little hostage situation. She pulled into an empty parking lot and quickly changed into the scrubs, it felt nice to be in clothes that didn’t expose her in the back. She opened Susan’s purse and took out her wallet before putting her keys in there and zipping it up. She climbed out of the car and started walking in the opposite direction to get to her parents place. At the corner of the street there was a pay phone and she used it to call a cab, as she waited she tried to think but all of her thoughts were still disconnected and she was getting more tired by the second.
Finally when she thought she was going to drop dead from exhaustion the cab pulled up to the pay phone and she got in quickly. She spit out the address that she needed to get to and the driver nodded and took off but not before he started the fare. She took a deep breath and looked out of the windows it was late fall and getting colder, she was lucky that it hadn’t been snowing because she wasn’t wearing any shoes.
“Hey do you have another cigarette?” Amber asked as she leaned forward to talk to the driver, she didn’t have a pack on her and she was thinking that it might be too dangerous for her to actually go into a gas station. The driver grunted and handed her one with a lighter and she lit it happily, it seemed like it had been ages since she had one. She handed the lighter back and looked into Susan’s wallet, she must have just gone to the bank because there was more then enough cash in there to get her home. She put her feet up in the back seat and took a long drag from her bummed cigarette. She didn’t think she had felt this relaxed in a long time, as she watched the scenery fly past the dirty windows of the cab she felt for just a moment that everything was going to be okay.
The next thing she knew the cab driver was waking her up and they were in the long driveway to her parent’s house. In the world that she started in she knew that she hadn’t told anyone about her parents house but she didn’t know if she had told anyone here, she assumed because she couldn’t remember telling anyone anything that she was safe. She paid the cab driver and ran inside to the guest house, were she sat down on the bed in the bedroom after locking the door and barricading it behind her. There was a bathroom attached to the room and she could certainly stick out 48 hours only drinking water, she was too scared to leave the room to get any food.
After a shower and a quick nap she decided that if she couldn’t go back to save Romano this instant maybe she could write down ideas on how to save him. She took some stationary and a pen from the desk in the room and sat down on the bed where she started to write. First she thought that if she stopped Romano from going on the roof all together then he could be saved, of course this might not work but how it wouldn’t work wasn’t something she couldn’t predict. She already had saved his arm but she couldn’t believe that didn’t alter his death in anyway, she took a deep breath and turned on the TV. There was a news bulletin about an escaped mental patient who had taken some one hostage before stealing a car and heading east. She laughed softly to herself because she actually went west after she called the cab, at this rate they would find the car but she wouldn’t be anywhere near it. She put the television on mute and walked into the bathroom where she filled a cup with water and started to drink, she figured the more that she drank the faster the drug would be flushed out of her system just like any other drug.
If stopping him from going outside didn’t work then why did she think that stopping him from going to the roof would work? Maybe she had to skip talking to him all together and go directly to the pilots of the aircraft and convince them not to take off. Even still if Romano was supposed to die on that day wouldn’t it happen anyway? She took the glass of water back into the bed room and laid on the bed again as she started to write. After a few moments the drugs started to take effect again and she yawned, she drank the rest of the water and curled up to go back to sleep hoping that when she woke up again she could set everything straight.
