| It was the first port of Buenos Aires City. The neighborhood was seat of immigrants, mainly native Genoveses, who arrived between 1880 and 1930. Among the most outstanding places in the aera, the "Museum Street" Caminito De la Rivera Theater (following the advice of the artist Quinquela Martin its seats were painted in different colors), the Fine Arts Museum of La Boca and the "Vuelta de Rocha", where there is a good view of the Nicolas Avellaneda Bridge. Enjoy the place sitting at a bar, appreciating the metal sheet houses painted with different colors, that inspired poets and painters. On weekends, thousand of tourists go around the neighborhood that displays street shows, handicrafts exhibits and different attractions. | | Primer puerto de la ciudad. El barrio fue asiento de inmigrantes, predominantemente genoveses, que arribaron entre 1880 y 1930. Entre los lugares m�s destacados mientras camina por la zona, se encuentran la Calle Museo Caminito, el Teatro de la Rivera (por sugerencia del artista Quinquela Mart�n sus butacas fueron pintadas de diferentes colores), el Museo de Bellas Artes de la Boca y la Vuelta de Rocha, desde la que se tiene una buena perspectiva del Puente Nicol�s Avellaneda. Tambi�n, se sugiere disfrutar de la idiosincrasia del lugar sentado en alg�n bar, apreciando las casas de chapas pintadas con varios colores, que fueron la inspiraci�n de poetas y pintores. Durante los fines de semana, miles de turistas transitan el barrio, que luce espect�culos callejeros, exposici�n de artesan�as y diferentes atracciones para ver. |
| In its beginnings, San Telmo was inhabited by the wealthiest families of Buenos Aires until 1871 when the Yellow Fever epidemic forced them to move North. With the passing of time, San Telmo's appearance changed and it became a sightseeing must' in which old time's valuable architecture can be appreciated. Among the interest spots you'll find the Orthodox Russian Church (1904), La Defensa" Alley (typical eighteenth century large house that recreates the Colonial Buenos Aires) and Colonel Manuel Dorrego Square (antiques fair every Sunday), where you can spend some time at a coffee shop, tango or jazz dance clubs. The virtue of San Telmo neighborhood lies on those interesting places one gets to know while walking, while going through stone pavement and narrow streets that surround colonial buildings, many of which act as antique dealers and ateliers. If you want to feel something different, it's worth the visit. |  |
En sus or�genes, fue habitado por las familias mas adineradas de Buenos Aires, hasta que la epidemia de la fiebre amarilla de 1871, los obligo a mudarse al norte; con el tiempo, su fisonom�a fue cambiando, hasta convertirse en un paseo obligado, donde se pueden apreciar las valiosas obras de arquitectura de tiempos anteriores. Entre los sitios de inter�s se destacan la Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa (1904), el pasaje de La Defensa (t�pica casona del siglo pasado que recrea el Buenos Aires Colonial) y la Plaza Coronel Manuel Dorrego (todos los domingos de 10 a 17 hs funciona la Feria de Antig�edades), donde puede disfrutar de confiter�as y boliches de tango y jazz. La virtud del barrio San Telmo est� en aquellos lugares tan interesantes que se descubren mientras se camina, al tiempo que se recorren calles empedradas y angostas, que circundan construcciones coloniales, muchas de las cuales funcionan como anticuarios y ateliers. | Buenos Aires has had since last September 9th a new neighborhood. It's officially theforty seventh neighborhood and for the first time in 26 years, a new division has been added to the map of Buenos Aires. The 170 hectares of Puerto Madero make it the most expensive area in the city as well as the safest. Despite being the least populated neighborhood (no more than 300 inhabitants) and the one with the fewest streets, it's the one that has received the largest investment in the last five years. As a result of the most important urbanization project in the history ofthe city, in 1993, the lands began to be transformed and the buildings that belonged to the old port, opened in 1899 and closed ten years later, started to be recycled. In this neighborhood there are nearly 40 restaurants, a complex with eight movie theaters, a church, the seat of the Argentine Catholic University (U. CA) and hundreds of office and apartment buildings. |  |
Buenos Aires tiene desde el 9 de septiembre pasado un nuevo barrio. Es oficialmente el n�mero 47 y por primera vez desde hace 26 a�os se agreg� una nueva divisi�n al mapa porte�o. Las 170 hect�reas que conforman Puerto Madero constituyen la zona m�s cara de la ciudad y, a su vez, la m�s segura. A pesar de ser el barrio menos poblado (no m�s de 300 habitantes) y el que tiene menos calles, es el que recibi� la mayor inversi�n en los �ltimos cinco a�os. Fruto del mayor proyecto de urbanizaci�n de la historia de la ciudad, durante 1993, comenzaron a transformarse las tierras y a reciclarse los edificios que pertenecieron al viejo puerto, inaugurado en 1899 y que 10 a�os despu�s perdi� operatividad. Aqu� funcionan cerca de 40 restaurantes, un complejo de 8 cines, una iglesia, la sede de la Universidad Cat�lica Argentina (U.C.A.) y centenares de oficinas y viviendas. |
