Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
(SNES version review)

Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom

Year released: 1991 (Arcade), 1992 (SNES), 1995? (Gameboy)

Number of Players: 1-2 simultaneously

SF II: TWW is the game that kick started the 2D fighting craze in the early 90s! It featured eight playable characters and four non-playable (at least in this game) boss characters. Of the twelve total characters, only three returned from the original Street Fighter: Ryu, Ken, and the final boss of SF, Sagat. In SF II: TWW, several warriors around the world have been invited to a tournament by the mysterious M. Bison.

Graphics: (82%)

Character sprites are a lot bigger, well animated, and more detailed than those found in SF. Each characters respective stage is detailed and all look really cool. The graphics in SF II: TWW are quite impressive, but dont look as good as its upgrades.

Control: (95%)

The controls are different from the first Street Fighter. In the first SF, you had one punch and one kick button. The strength of each depended on how hard you hit the button. In SF II, you have a light punch, medium punch, and heavy punch, and a light kick, medium kick, and a strong kick.

Sounds: (85%)
The background music for each stage has become familiar to most fighting game fans because each individual theme is so catchy. The announcer sounds fine too, but doesnt say much.

Gameplay: (85%)

In Street Fighter II: TWW, your goal is to defeat each opponent by using punches, kicks, throws, or special moves. This time around, special moves are much easier to pull of than in the first game. Computer AI is pretty intelligent, and will attack you if you leave an opening.

Replayability: (70%)

SF II: TWW suffers from a lack of replay value, because there is only a one and two player mode, you cant play as the four boss characters, and you cant pick the same character. All of these, however, were corrected in the upgrade to SF II: TWW, Street Fighter II: Championship Edition.

Bottom Line:
I can see why everyone was so crazy about this game. A good start to the Street Fighter II series, but the upgrades to SF II make SF II: TWW fairly obsolete.

Final Score: (83%) B
