Street Fighter II: Special Championship Edition
(Genesis version review)

Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom

Year released: 1992 (Arcade, released under the name of SF II: Championship Edition), 1993 (Genesis, released as SF II: SCE)

Number of Players: 1-2 simultaneously

Street Fighter II: Championship Edition was the first upgrade to SF II: The World Warrior. It featured a few tweaks, such as the ability to play the same character, but most of all; you had the ability to finally play as the boss characters, Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison. SF II: CE was ported to the Sega Genesis as Street Fighter II: Special Championship Edition.

Graphics: (81%)
The graphics on the Genesis version are decent. The biggest problem is that the colors look very bland, because the Genesiss color palette was much smaller than the SNESs.

Control: (70%)
This is what hurt SF II: SCE the most. The standard Genesis controller has only three buttons, meaning you had to push Start to switch between punches and kicks. Sure, theres a much better six button controller out there that works like a charm, but most people own three button controllers, which was the only one out when this game came out.

Sounds: (80%)
The sound on the Genesis version is very muffled and doesnt sound as good as the arcade version. The music is probably MIDI-quality and voices dont sound very good.

Gameplay: (80%)

The controls hurt the gameplay a lot. Unless youve got quick reflexes to switch to punch to kick while youre attacking or while youre trying to defend yourself, youre going to have problems. The six-button controller works great, though.

Replayability: (68%)
If youve played SF II: TWW, you know what to expect. Again, theres only a 1P and 2P mode, and not much else.

Bottom Line:
A decent conversion. Only play if you have a six-button controller or an arcade stick, because it makes the gameplay much easier. If you have a SNES, get Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting instead, but if you only have a Genesis, you do have a decent SF II game to choose from.

Final Score: (76%) C
