A Young Marine's Last Farewell         By Larry Reeves

Tonight the war ship lies sleeping in the harbor
Tomorrow shell lift anchor and sail upon the sea
Sailing for a land somewhere beyond the horizon
Far, far away from this land of sweet liberty

A young Marine sails on that ship tomorrow
With a heavy heart he bids his last farewell
For his freedom he cherishes so dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

The sound of distant war drums ring so clearly
With his honor held high he marches into hell
Though he thinks of the home he loves so dearly
The bitter taste of war he knows so very well

A young Marine sails on that ship tomorrow
With a heavy heart he bids his last farewell
For his freedom he cherishes so dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

He hears the cry of freedom loudly raising
What tomorrow holds only fate can tell
Across the sea an evil war is blazing
To fight for liberty he bids his last farewell

Though tomorrow death may find him
He holds his head high for his last farewell
For freedom he cherishes so dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

Shed not a tear for this young Marine
For tomorrow he will serve his time so very well
Save your tears to see what fate may bring him
And hope not for the tolling of the final bell

To fight for freedom he has no sorrow
His sorrow is only for his last farewell
For freedom he cherishes so dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

Should death and darkness come to take him
And his ship be sunk into the sea
Through his last breath he will smell
The fragrance of the land of sweet liberty

And should he return safe home again
His deeds of honor will speak so well
For freedom he cherishes so dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

One last time he salutes this land
And bids her his last farewell
For freedom he cherishes so dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
