The purpose of the Coastal Georgia Community College Police Department is to maintain a secure environment and to serve its jurisdiction with a pro-active approach to the prevention of crime. The Department meets all the requirements set by state law governing police agencies and has the primary jurisdiction on the campus. Certified police officers are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It is the policy of Coastal Georgia Community College that all emergencies and campus crimes are reported to the on-duty officer to enable prompt reporting and/or action. To report a campus emergency or crime, one should call 9-258-3133 from on-campus phones and 258-3133 from public or off-campus phones. For calls for service, such as unlocking vehicles, jumpstarts, or other non-emergency notifications, one should call the Campus Police office at 262-2336 or -2336 from campus phones.
Use of the campus facilities is by authorization only, but the public is invited to enjoy such public areas as the Library and Par Course. Security and safety considerations are taken into account in the planning and upkeep of the campus buildings and grounds.
The college police department enjoys a good working relationship with the other police jurisdictions with which it interrelates. A mutual aid agreement with the Brunswick Police Department allows for direct radio communications and support between the two agencies. Any off-campus participation in criminality by individuals or groups related to the college is monitored through networking between the college police department and outside agencies.
Prevention of crime is the focus of the Campus Police. Prevention programs include crime prevention informational speeches given relative to prevention generally; specific sexual assault awareness and prevention programs; and the use of various media for the dissemination of crime prevention information. The office of Student Development Services offers counseling and referral in the event of an occurrence of sexual assault on campus. Sexual offenses are considered to be quite serious, and victims will be treated with the utmost respect and consideration. Offenders will be dealt with appropriately and seriously as circumstances dictate. It should be noted that, even with the very low incidence of crime on campus, one should lock up valuables (including vehicles and gym lockers) and be aware of personal safety and security. Many petty thefts that have occurred on campus recently could have been prevented if reasonable measures had been employed by the victim.
The use of alcohol and illegal drugs is prohibited on campus. Regarding the Drug-free Postsecondary Education Act of 1990, Coastal Georgia Community College has adopted and published a drug-free campus policy that is included in the student handbook and staff handbook. The college police department strictly enforces this policy. It also enforces the prohibition against underage possession and consumption of alcohol on the campus grounds and other areas under the control of the college.
Student Development Services not only provides initial counseling for students with problems with alcohol and drugs but also distributes publications, has drug and alcohol awareness programs and other related student activities, and provides referrals for students needing additional drug and alcohol counseling. The office has also established and published policies related to campus sex offenses. These policies may be referred to on page 30 of the Coastal Georgia Community College Student Handbook known as The Green and the Gold.

A total of nine larceny incidents occurred during the period of 1/1/00-12/31/00. Although larceny is not required to be reported, we hope that by advising our participants of these occurrences, we can reduce petty theft by removing opportunity. The Campus Police suggest that all individuals protect themselves and their property by locking up valuables and taking other reasonable measures to prevent crime on campus.
NOTE: The Clery Bill (the Campus Security Act) has changed to require inclusion of statistics in the above categories for adjacent areas. There is no clear delineation in the law for what is considered to be adjacent areas to campuses. Coastal Georgia Community College will define what seems logical to be included in this reporting requirement and begin gathering data for the next reporting year.
