MANILA (PNA) – An official of the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) denied the claim of Marikina City Mayor Marides Fernando that they have submitted to LLDA an application to operate a dumpsite.
This is in relation to the continuous operation of the Doña Petra dumpsite in Concepcion I, Marikina City despite numerous Cease and Desist Order (CDO) from LLDA.
According to LLDA assistant general manager Dolora N. Nepomuceno, they are puzzled with the lady mayor’s statement because they haven’t actually received even a single communication from the LGU for the purpose of putting up and maintaining a dumpsite for the city.
"According to our records, we have not received any application from them," she said.
Nepomuceno stressed that they are not "sleeping" in the city government's application due to the fact that there are no applications to be looked into.
Joint personnel from the LLDA and the Department of Environment and National Resources (DENR) have conducted an ocular inspection to the said dumpsite to get a sample of water from the area.
The said inspection was made after the residents around the dumpsite cried foul about the dumpsite's continuous operation, which to this date has reached 10 meters high.
Residents claimed that they have acquired various diseases as a result of their water sources contaminated from the dumpsite.
Nepumuceno said that they would not leave this issue hanging since they are after the welfare of not only the residents of the nearby areas where the dumpsite is being "illegally" operated but also to the areas where all the waters from this dumpsite flows.
Earlier, Mayor Fernando said they are still using the said dumpsite even with the knowledge of the CDO because they have nowhere to dump their garbage.
"The San Mateo landfill was closed and we have no alternative dumpsite to throw our garbage sp we looked for new one, thus, the opening of the Doña Petra," she said.
Meanwhile, residents around the area of the dumpsite urged the LLDA to seriously look into the matter to eradicate the problem it cause to their near death.
