GENERAL FAQ

(1) What is Maria-sama ga miteru all about?
Maria-sama ga miteru is a story about students at Lillian High School, an all-girls high school. There is a unique system in Lillian School called the soeur system. In order to help new students quickly make Lillian their new 'home', senior students adopt their juniors as their petite soeurs (younger sisters). The soeur system is optional, not mandatory. The story starts when Sachiko, a 2nd year student, tries to make Yumi, a 1st year student, her petite soeur.

(2) Who writes Maria-sama ga Miteru?
Konno Oyuki (She is on the right side, the person on the left is the seiyuu of Yumi)
Hibiki Reine brings Konno Oyuki's work alive with her drawings in the manga/novels.

(3) What is Marimite?
The short name of Maria-sama ga Miteru.

~Like other popular mangas, Maria-sama ga Miteru manga is serialized in Margaret, a semi monthly magazine released on 5th and 20th every month . The novel version (text only) is serialized in Cobalt magazine, a bi-monthly magazine released on 18th of the odd months. (lordwu).
~The 1st manga was published on Feb 25th 2004, basically a collection of serialized mangas from Margaret magazine and printed on better papers.

(5) Is there any English version for the anime/manga/novels?
None.
The anime is unlicensed, but since it is published by Geneon (anime division of Pioneer), it has a good chance to be licensed in near future. At the moment, a joint effort betwen Lililicious and Anime Source is fansubbing the series. Anime Keep and HQA are starting to release their versions too. The manga is being scan-lated by Lililicious group using the margaret magazine version as their source.

(6) Do manga/anime/drama CD/novels follow the same storyline?
Yes, the anime follows the story from the novels but leaving some side stories behind. The manga has more details than the anime, however the drama CDs is the closest one in details to the novels.

(9) Are there any marimite fan-sites in English?
Unfortunately, there is none. Please inform us if you have found a decent one.

(10) How's about marimite fan-sites in Japanese or other languages?
(11) What is Yuri? Why do people call Maria-sama ga Miteru as a Yuri show?
Yuri is a term to describe a romantic relationship between two girls in anime/mangas. (pkgirl163)
Many people will have their own views on Marimite.

" First of all, I do not think Maria-sama ga Miteru as a Yuri show. When seeing the close relationship between two pretty girls, many guys simply come to the conclusion that it is yuri. I prefer to see it as a beautiful story of sisterhood relationships, that's my opinion on this matter." (SleeplessHeart)
Spoiler:

There is an exception. The relationship between Sei and Shiori is different from the others.

"I guess what pulled me in was the idea of the "sœur system" and the beautiful female relationship between the sœurs was something that was pure and clear; something that male readers [stereotypically] see as real-life high-school girls to be lacking nowadays." (kj1980)

In the end, it is a matter of your opinion to judge Maria-sama ga Miteru by yourself.

(12) How's about Esu? Why is Marimite called an Esu anime?
Esu is the japanese's pronounciation of letter 'S', the first letter of the word 'Sister' . It actually represents a genre which tells stories about 'sisterhood relationships'. The genre of esu literature was started in 1910's and became popular amoung schoolgirls. So it is correct to say that Esu has a longer history than Yuri. (touko_no_doriru)

(13) Is Maria-sama ga Miteru popular in Japan?
Very. Laurore31 has done a mini interview with a japanese girl, a marimite fan.

(14) What is Maria-sama niwa Naisho?
The fist volume of Marimite DVD comes with a bonus episode, "Maria-sama niwa Naisho" (Don't tell Virgin Mary). It is a very cute episode, but a very short one. I will not give the spoiler here. Hmmm, who is in marimite resembling Chiyo-san from Azumanga Daioh?
Update: It looks that they will include a Maria-sama niwa Naisho episode in every DVD release.

(15) Has the story ended in novels/manga?
No, the story is still going on.
The novel story is far ahead compared with manga/anime. The manga is lagging behind the anime.

(16) What is 'Onee-sama'?
The polite way you call your older sister.

(17) I have just watched Marimite. Now, I desperately need someone whom I can call 'Onee-sama'
Wrong forum. But you are in luck. Many of our animesuki marimite gang members are females, we may adopt you as our soeur.

STORYLINE FAQ

(1) Who are yamayurikai?
Yamayurikai (literally means mountain lily council) is the most important soeur/ sisterhood relationship in Lillian's High School because its members are also the leaders of Lilian student council. The leader of yamayurikai are called Rosa Chinesis, Rosa Foetida and Rosa Gigantea. Their petite soeurs/little sisters are called as Rosa Chinesis en bouton, Rosa Foetida en bouton and Rosa Gigantea en Bouton, they are also the expected the successors when the three Rosas graduate.

(2) What is Rosa? What language is that?
Rosa is a latin word, the genus name of rose flowers.
Yamayurikai leaders are symbolized with three different types of roses.

(3) How's about en bouton? What does it mean?
En bouton is a french word. It is a bit difficult to find an equivalent english word, however it roughly means that it is still in the state of 'flower bud', waiting to blossom soon.
In japanese language, the word "tsubomi" is used a couple of times in the anime. It is also used in the novels and manga but is always read as "en bouton" (just as "benibara-sama," "shirobara-sama," and "kibara-sama" are always read with their Rosa names). (Thanks to pkgirl163)

(4) Who are the characters? I am still confused with these rosa things
Refer to the Help on Mariasama ga miteru thread.

(5) What are the episodes of Marimite Season 1?
Marimite titles are shown in two languages: Japanese and French.
Spoiler:

Episode 1....La déclaration troublante....................The troubling souer declaration
Episode 2....Un duo inattendu................................An unexpected duet
Episode 3....Le lune ét le chapélét........................The moon and the rosary
Episode 4....La révolution de roses jaunes.............Yellow rose revolution
Episode 5....Les jeunes filles conbattontes............The fighting maidens
Episode 6....Rosa canina.....................................Rosa canina
Episode 7....Chocolat étonnant ~ pemiere partie....Surprise chocolate ~ first part
Episode 8....Chocolat étonnant ~ deuxime partie...Surprise chocolate ~ second part
Episode 9....Une carte rouge................................A red card
Episode 10..Le bosquet de roses épineux.............The forest of roses thorns
Episode 11..Les pétales blanches........................The white petals
Episode 12..Les premier rendez-vous à trois.........The first date, a triangle one
Episode 13..Bonjeur, ma sœur.............................Good day, my sister (onee-sama)

(6) I am confused with the chronology of events in Marimite Season 1. Why does X'mas come after the Valentine? Where are the missing months?
Spoiler:

The anime puts the Valentine day arc first before the Ibara no Miki arc. According to the novel, Ibara no Miki arc is supposed to happen first on December time-frame, then on February of the following year, the Valentine day arc will follow. Most likely explanation for this confusing order is the marketing reason. The publisher has arranged the Valentine Day episode of Marimite aired around the actual Valentine day (Remember, Marimite season 1 was started on January 2004). In this way, they can arrange Marimite-theme events for Valentine days and advertise Marimite products. (kj1980)

If you want to watch the marimite season 1 according to the order in the Marimite novel, here is the recommended order:
Episode 1 to 5, Episode 10 to 11, Episode 6 to 9 and Episode 12 to 13. (atua)

(7) That's interesting. Could you explain the relationship between anime episodes and the novels?
Spoiler:

I will post this one tomorrow....

(8) Why didn't Sei choose a petite soeur when she was at 2nd grade? As the result, there are only two members of Rosa Gigantea sisterhood!
This will be revealed in Episode 11, Season 1.
Spoiler:

When Sei was at 2nd grade, Sei fell in love with a girl, Shiori. She ignored her responsibility as a member of Yamayurikai because Shiori was everything for her.

(9) Why did Sachiko seem to be reluctant to play as Cinderella? Spoiler!
Spoiler:

The person who would play as the prince from Hanadera Academy is Kashiwagi Suguru, her cousin and also her fiancee (matched by their parents).
While Sachiko really loves Suguru, her love is in vain since Suguru seems to prefer an intimate relationship with a guy. (I love a politically correct statement)

(10) Why did Yumi refused to let her chocolate go? Spoiler!
Spoiler:

The anime gives a very short description on what is going on. A detailed explanation can be found in the "Yumi's Valentine Dayl" special edition manga which has been translated by lililicious group. Yumi made two box of chocolates, one is a normal version but the other one is the "feel-my-wrath" version for Sei.

(11) Why did Shiori choose that decision? Spoiler!
Spoiler:

One of the toughest questions in Marimite season one. Why did Shiori abandon her promise to run away with Sei?
So far in my search, Marimite unfortunately does not provide any further details on her reason. However, if you are a christian/catholic, you may already have some understanding on Shiori's choice. In Christian teaching, the relationship between God and a person takes the precedence over anything else. Since Shiori has decided to become a nun, meaning she wants to have a closer relationship to God by doing a full-time service, she ought to get over Sei.

There is a thread debating this issue.

From the shrine, they visits Sachiko's house. To her surprise, Yumi finds her brother, Yuuki there with none other, Kashiwagi Suguru at his side. Yuuki, called as "Yukichi" at his school - Hanadera Gakuin, is also a member of Hanadera's student body like Suguru. Apparently, Yuuki was “kidnapped” from his friends at an arcade by Kashiwagi-senpai. It is a little secret that Suguru is a bisexual person (leaning more towards men) and has set his eyes on Yuuki. For Sachiko, Yuuki seems to be the only male from them that she isn’t afraid of – because he is Yumi’s brother.
Sachiko, Sayako (Sachiko's mother), Suguru, Sei, Yumi and Yuuki play card and board games at the Ogasawara house. After that, Sei, Yumi and Yuuki decide to stay over for the night. Yuuki strongly objects to sleep in the same room with Kashiwagi-senpai. Meanwhile, Rosa Gigantea and Kashiwagi Suguru do not get along very well… For Yumi, she gets to sleep alongside with her beloved onee-sama, Sachiko-sama.
Sayako writes - “Nakakiyono Toono Nefurino Minamisame Naminori Funeno Otonoyokikana” A palindrome and an ancient Japanese scripture that you write and slip it under your pillow to see a good New Year’s dream. Sachiko thanks Yumi for her visit because she was extremely troubled with Suguru-san staying at her house for the holidays.

Chapter 2 “Kibara Kousaku” [Missing]

She loved them so much that Rei promised that she would make them again this year. But the box that lies in front of her right now is a big one, a very big one in fact. Perhaps, Rei mistakenly gave the one actually meant for Yoshino.
At the same time, Yoshino is pondering over the Valentine’s Day present which Hasegura Rei gave her too. Usually, Yoshino’s dilemma is the ever-growing Valentine’s Day present that Rei gives her every year. But this year…it is too big! Perhaps this is the year, the year that Yoshino dreaded. But wait... Rei-chan gave this to her after she returned from huffing-and-puffing at Rosa Foetida’s place…Is it possible that this one was actually meant for Rosa Foetida? At the same time, both Eriko and Yoshino are thinking the same way, “if it is Rei I[we] are thinking about, it’s possible that she has made a goof.” But since it is already late at night, neither Eriko nor Yoshino decides to call Rei (nor each other) to find that out. What a dilemma for them!
Meanwhile, Rei is relaxing in her bath recalling how she made the three poundcakes: for her father, Yoshino and Rosa Foetida.

Novel#06 Valentine Gift - Part 2

Chapter 2 “Akai Card” – covered in anime Episode 9

Chapter 3 “Rosa Chinensis, Jinsei Sairyou no Hi” [Missing]
It has been a terrible day for Rosa Chinensis. Not only she has her monthly sickness, but she catches a cold as well. Furthermore, today also happens to be the day of her university entrance examination too. This afternoon, when she came to Lillian to visit the yamayurikai, she forgot to alight at the bus stop in front of the Lillian High School - she got off at the next stop and walked back. Today must be Rosa Chinensis’ worst day ever.
Suddenly, her body screams. “My stomach hurts, my stomach hurts, my stomach hurts!” Rosa Chinensis rushes into the nearest restroom and as she sat on the toilet, she faints and awaits her recovery
As she recovers she hears somebody is crawling into the restroom window – it seems like someone is trying to chase off people who were following her. It is Yumi. Since Rosa Chinensis is in the locked room, Yumi-chan does not notice Rosa Chinensis to be in the same restroom.

“Ah, yes today was the Valentine’s Day event – that’s the reason why I came to Lillian after school.”
She heads for the Bara no Yakata – and to her surprise, the place is filled with students
Her dream of an “open Bara no Yakata” has been fulfilled, and her joy rises, seeing how students in the Yamayurikai board room are having fun.
She tell her self, "Worst day ever? who am I kidding, this is the best day ever!”

Special thanks to kj1980. Without him, this FAQ would not exist.

Do you know?
[*] Yumi always change her hair ribbons every day.
[*] A small story happened during the voice recording. When Ueda Kana, the seiyuu of Yumi, was recording the scene where Yumi weeps, she was actually moved to tears. Itou Miki, the seiyuu of Sachiko, enveloped Kana in her arms and stroked her head gently. [touko_no_doriru]
[*] In the last episode of Marimite season 1. The seiyuu of Rosa Kanina sings "Ave Maria" by herself! (pkgirl163)

More to come!
