New Zealand is a self-governing country in the Southern Pacific Ocean. The area is 268,676 sq km. New Zealand is a mountainous country with several larges regions of plains. New Zealand is in the temperate zone. The climate is generally mild.

  The capital of New Zealand is Wellington. Other urban centres are Auckland, Christchurch and Hamilton.

     Associated with New Zealand are Ross Dependency (in Antarctica) and the Cook Islands (Rarotonga), Tonga, Niue, and Tokelau (All Islands in the Pacific Ocean).The land is the most important resource. New Zealand has a large population of wild birds, including 23 native species.

   More than 80% of the population enters "Christian" on the census form. Many of the Maori are members of the “Ratana” and “Ringatu” Christian sects.

   English is the official First language, and Maori the official Second language, but it is very rare to hear or to speak Maori. Education is free for children between the ages of 6 and 15 years.

   New Zealand's unit of currency is the New Zealand dollar comprising coins with values of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, $1 and $2, and notes with values of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.
