Grade 4As News

Teachers:  Mrs. Muto-Pomakis and Mme. Campeau

Welcome back to school everyone!  I hope you had some wonderful holidays with your families and friends!  Im excited to start a brand new year with you!  Thank you to all the parents who have been returning the letters from home to school informing me about your children!  This has been a great starting point for all of us, and extremely helpful in allowing me to get to know your child and his or her homework habits and hobbies.  Im hoping that I will be able to keep an open communication with you and that you wont hesitate to contact me with your questions if you ever have any!  I look forward to receiving more of the letters from home over the next few days.    Mrs. Muto-Pomakis

In French, we are continuing to practice cursive writing in our daily activities and we are viewing how to write simple French sentences.  Also, we are learning to conjugate the verbs aller and faire in the present tense.  Next DICTE will be on January 16th.
In Sciences, we are continuing the unit of light and sounds.  We have just finished building musical instruments and presenting in small groups a song where we played these instruments. Great work!  We are now currently learning how sounds are created and how it travels to our ears.

Curriculum News: As we start the new year we are looking at number sense and numeration in our Math section, focussing on understanding of the addition and subtraction of larger numbers and determining whether or not the answers given are reasonable.  There is also a great deal of focus on mental math so feel free to test the waters and see if you can challenge your child on a mental math race (a great game to practice at home found in your childs math textbook on page 97).
In Language Arts we are looking at various parts of speech and I would like to do a little bit of drama based on these parts of speech before the months end.  Over this month and possibly the next we will also be creating our own class newspaper.  This will be based on what the students find worthy of calling news. It should be interesting so keep your eyes peeled for it and ask your child what he or she plans to write about.  Hopefully our newspaper will be published about the same time as our next class newsletter. We are having our first WWW (Word Wall Words) spelling test on January 13th and will continue to enrich our vocabulary with more WWW over the next weeks.  Dont forget to hand in your Scholastics order for English books by January 19th.
