April 2006                                      Volume 3, Issue 1
April showers bring May flowers or so we hope!  Weve seen some beautiful days lately but please remember to have your child dress properly for the weather that might be coming in the up-coming weeks.  The school yard is a VERY WET place right now, and splash pants and rain boots are highly recommended.  Thanks so much to the grade four boys who gave me the honour of opening the dam in their waterworks in the yard.  If you havent seen the waterworks yet, be sure to check it out after a rainy day in our school yard! Mrs. Muto-Pomakis

French:
In writing, our class is currently working on making different types of sentence such as formulating questions. Dictes this month will be on April 4th and April 24th.

Science:
We are working on the unit of pulleys and gears.  We are learning about different types of gears and what they are used for in our everyday life.  We will be wrapping up this unit at the end of the month with a test.

We are continuing the unit on Medieval Times.  We will be discussing this month what people ate during the medieval period and what they did for entertainment.  Castle project are to be handed in on April 13th.
Also, we will be wrapping up this unit by having a Medieval Feast in the afternoon of April 21st.

Art:
For 3rd term we are focusing on drama and dance.  This month we will be creating small spontaneous skits to practice speaking in French.

Thank you! Mme Campeau

In Math, the students have been truly improving their math skills and more and more often, during our math minutes we have more students finishing off earlier.  Our practicing skills at home and at school really seem to be paying off!  Well be finishing this unit about mid-month and be moving on to a measurement unit for area and grids.  Continue to practice your multiplication and division skills at home and visit the math web-site to try out some math fun!  Well try to do math games at school that we can continue to use at home as a math practice activity.  Make sure to ask your child about the math games before the test mid-month.

In Language Arts, Castle in the Attic seems to be a real hit with the students!  I find myself reminding them not to rush ahead of the class as well be doing more speculation in the weeks ahead.  Weve also begun doing 5-minute daily language reviews.  The students have been doing this individual work consistently, and at the same time are learning to develop their self-help skills.  In class, I am encouraging the students to ask others before approaching the teacher.  This helps fortify students knowledge of material, increases self-confidence and at the same time allows students to practice relaying and explaining material without giving out answers.  We are still working on the last skill especially in the class, and I will be watching out that we as a class arent just handing out answers and losing the lesson! - Mrs. Muto-Pomakis
