Pet-shop puppies
Pet-shops are thoses animal stores,"supermarkets" that expose pups inside of a glass-cage,in purpose to sell them.
Lets concentrate in dogs. The puppies are ordered per "kilo" coming from Eastern countries (Hungarie,Slovaquia,Tchecoslovaquia) or from European neighbours(Irland,Italia,Spane,Belgium who traffics towards France). To have an idea, the leader importer from France orders 38000pups/year ,thus 700pups/week.You must also add the imports of other brokers (veterinarians!)who ,each year, transfer each one alone, more than 10000 pups.Pet -shops themselves ,principle clients of thoses importers, sell almost 100000 pups year!
The mothers of thoses pups live in cold and dirty cages, made of ciment,1x1m2,used just as single uterus, "reproduction machines",having litters every 6 months, without control and when they are not prolific anymore they are "picked",or poisonned or even worse, sold as an animal for experimentation laboratories!
The pups are stack up in cages-often separated from their mothers before weaning-transported in a truck in deplorable conditions.5 of 10 puppies die before the arrival at the pet-shop .A large part of the pups present health problems ,leading to death,at the first week of their acquisition.
At their arrival to the pet-shop ,pups are placed in "glass-cages",in the middle of their excrements("pipi and caca"),not able to run or play with their litter-mates ,till a client-guided most of times from his feelings and his ignorance-gives his money to thoses merchands ,"to get it out of his misery" and promote "again" the animal traffic.....vicious cercle with no end!!
The majority of pet-shops will pretend that their pups are coming from good ,local breeders and that they are "real" jack russells, even if they don't allow you to see the parents or give you a pedigree. In fact a serious ,good breeder -local or foreign one- will NEVER accept to place his pups in a glass-cage!He will be so worried, not to sleep at night, with the idea that his/her pups are sold to unsuitable owners , that they live in a 1x1 box in the middle of their sheet, that they could end in rescues companies or in a laboratory!
Ask the pet-shop for the adresses of thoses "good breeders".You'll see that they are nothing else than puppy farms, that produce and/or import massively puppies;that they are irresponsible "breeders",who sell for money, without any check of genetic disease, without pedigrees, who mate just by luck males and females,"similarly" looking like a jack russell terrier, completely out of the standard, with no limits
"....... similar to JRT...."
They will also pretend that pups are "health guaranteed"....This "guarantee" offers a bit of consolation to the pup who is born or will devellop a genetic health defect that could have been avoided if the pet-shop checked out the parents for health defects, but forgot......this will keep their financial situation down, cause it costs a lot of money!Anyway ,they know that they will never have to honor thoses kind of guaranties because most genetic troubles occure in 1-2-3years and that at that time ,the owners have such an attachment with the dog that they won't return it in anyway to the shop!
Exept for health problems ,behaviour troubles must be added too.A pup that grows away from his mother and from his litter mates, taken before weaning, living in a glass-cage in the middle of his excrements(a pup never eliminates in the place where he sleeps!),without any socialisation(never gets out of the "box" to meet external world or learn "canine language"),with no stimuli, can only devellop into a very problematic dog.Add to all this the pop up of uncontrolled genes(ex:and if its parents were agressive?Of course you couldn't know it cause you are not allow to see them,to have an idea of their temperament!),we reach ,major behaviour troubles(agressive dog, depressive dog, anxious dog, feary dog ,hyperactive dog.....),difficult to face by most of the owners-who in general don't get well informed about this subject-,which leads to spend more money to behaviourist veterinarians, educators,or leave the dog in front of a rescue group and from there, god knows where it'll end!
To summarize:You may feel compassion and be tempted to "rescue" a pet-shop pup. This is absolutely understandable to feel sorry for them. But your good intentions will fall down ,because you are filling the pup-industry with money! You have emptied a box, which leaves place for other pups that will be born to fill the space!Even if your pup turns out healthy ,the others won't be healthy and by acting like this ,you contribute:
To the misery of the femelles who spend their lives closed into a small cage, producing again and again like "product -machines" and sold to laboratories or leaded to euthanasia ,when they are no longer prolific.
To the misery of the futur pups, destinated to live in horrible conditions, presenting health and behaviour problems.
To the misery of futur owners trying to face,in vain, all thoses problems.
To the misery of rescue companies that try to cope with the number of pet-shop pups being abandonated by irresponsibles and ignorant owners ,to get rid of all the problems above.
I
hope now that you have realised that by bying thoses"cutes little
pups" exposed in pet-shops,you also buy:
The physical and behavioural troubles that were created by defective genes ,that have poped up from non tested parents, who you will never be allowed to see! Worse, you enforce the traffic and fill the industry with more coins, who takes profit and tyrranises innocent animals! You fill rescue groups with more and more abandonned dogs and lead many of them to death! You encourage thoses marchands to take profit of the good breeding work made by serious breeders ,who spend THEIR money to improve a breed and produce healthy and well-balanced pups! Simply,to have your conscious clear,pet-shop pups MUST NOT be a choise for anyone!Better wait 1 year for a healthy,well-balanced,close to the standard pup, than buy it in a second of emotional feeling that will lead to years of regret and misery! If you want a pup,and you want it NOW,and the faster way you find is ,going to a pet-shop,then prepare to cope with all the consequenses for you and the poor pup!
