Courting
Destruction Chapter 6/?
A short while later, Rose sat in catering sipping a cup of hot tea while watching the ebb and flow of talent around her. So far her job hadn’t been going too badly. She was still learning the ropes and if a few more lights seemed to go out in her part of the arena when things got too tense for her nobody had seemed to notice. Now all she had to do was figure out whom she was going to try to set her dad and uncle up with. There weren’t that many girls around that she would even pretend to think were appropriate for the pair. She watched the divas go by wondering if any of them might do as she felt a presence slide up next to her. The young woman grinned as she turned to see her cousin standing there.
“Hey just the person I was looking for. You seen any good prospects,” She started to ask.
Before Solie could reply Randy Orton can storming up the pair getting in Rose’s
face, “You… you’re the new security girl right? What’s the idea of telling Edge
I was setting him up? You trying to get me pissed enough to get you fired
before you cash your first paycheck?”
Grey eyes narrowed dangerously on the young man. Her lower jaw jutted out a clear indication that she was angry and rapidly on her way to livid. Without giving herself time to think about what she was doing she reached out grabbing the irate man above the elbow and flinging him back.
All conversation in the room ceased as Solie took up position between her cousin and the young man. It didn't escape her notice that he seemed just as surprised as the rest of them when she had easily moved him. “You might want to think twice before you start something you can't finish,” Lee warned in a low tone.
“Is that a threat,” Randy asked the faintest hint of amusement coloring his words.
Solie shook her head the corner of her mouth twitching. “Oh no honey, I don't make threats...too declasse.” She strolled over to him hips slightly swaying. Leaning up on tiptoes she whispered in his ear, “I make promises and I promise you if ever do something that stupid again I will make you very sorry.”
Randy stood there a moment stunned by the fact that this woman seemed to think she could take him out. He didn't know if he should be insulted or amused by her actions. In the end he settled for glaring at her, which seemed to have no effect. “I don't know who you think you are,” he began.
“That's right you don't know me, or her for that matter,” Lee said jerking a thumb in her cousin's direction. “So until you do I'd suggest you take that attitude and shove it where the sun don't shine.”
Rose, aware of the crowd they had attracted, walked over and gently pulled her cousin back from the irate star. “Mr. Orton I’m sure that Edge must have misunderstood what I mentioned overhearing. You must have better things to do than spar with my cousin, there is nary a title belt to found for the effort,” she grinned disarmingly at the man.
Lee bristled at Rose’s cajoling though in the back of her mind she was aware of the need to diffuse the situation more for their sake than the man before them. “Thanks Ro but I can handle this jerk on my own.”
Randy looked from one girl to the other, an amused smirk on his face. “You think you can handle me huh? We’ll have to see about that.” Noticing a production aid waving at him from the distance he added, “Fortunately for you, I have a promo to cut now. Maybe we can take this up later.” He winked at the pair and strolled off. He was as anxious for the crowd to forget seeing him pushed aside by a girl as the cousins were.
Solie looked from where Randy had been to her cousin. She wasn't sure who she was angrier with at the moment, Rose or Orton. She growled low in her throat hands clenching spasmodically as her cousin turned to face her.
Seeing the rage clearly burning in the other woman's eyes Rose grabbed her cousin's arm. Dragging her out of catering she opened the first door she came to, then seeing it was empty threw Lee in it. Her patience with Solie's antics was beyond taxed at the moment. “Shit can the attitude Lee,” Rose ground out, her green eyes bright with the beginnings of her own temper. “I know you're not happy. Hell, neither am I, but you don't see me making a scene do you?”
“How in the fuck was that my fault,” Solie asked harshly running her fingers through her hair as she paced back and forth. “I didn't get in your face or threaten to have you fired, he did. You can't tell me you wouldn't have done the same had he come at me like that”
“Lee I'm not saying that you weren't right to defend me but you need to think beyond the moment. We don't know anyone here and there were no familiar faces to back you up or cover up should it have come to that. This is exactly what our fathers are looking for to set us up with someone. If you don't get a handle on this you're going to end up screwing us both,” Rose explained as patiently as she was able.
Solie deflated a bit at that, knowing that her cousin was right. “I'm sorry Ro,” she said sighing heavily. “I don't know what came over me.” She shook her head wearily sitting on the low bench to put her head in her hands. “That's not true...I know what happened I didn't think; I only reacted.”
The strawberry blonde nodded. “That’s not surprising considering all we’ve been through lately, not to mention how close it is to the full moon. But we need to keep our instincts in check at least until we get a handle on everything…. Most especially our dads,” she winked at the other girl letting her know all was forgiven. “Now who are we going to try to set them up with? I think we’re on the East Coast next week. Think they’d object if we set them up on a double date with Moolah and Mae?”
“Not only do I think they would object I think we really would have to make out our wills,” Lee answered laughing. “Seriously though, I now know why they're still single,” she said looking up at her cousin. “Some of these girls are enough to make me wonder why their mothers didn't just eat them at birth.”
The face Solie made caused Rose to laugh as well. It was a cross between disgust and pain. She sat down on the bench next to her cousin. “It makes me wish that Lita and Trish were around,” she commiserated.
Lee nodded her head in agreement. “The way dad talked about 'em they were just about the only ones they could stand. I think that's only because they could actually wrestle.”
“True,” Ro answered. “This is going to be a lot harder than I had originally thought,” she said on a sigh.
A knock on the door interrupted whatever was else they had been about to say. A blonde head peeked around the corner. “Good, just the girls I was looking for,” the man said stepping into the room and shutting the door behind him.
Rose’s heart skipped a beat as Shawn Michaels entered the room. It has been a long time since she had a crush on the Heartbreak Kid. He had grown older as had she but she still remembered what a bumbling idiot his mere presence had made of her as a teen. She struggled not to move, sure she would knock something over if she did.
Thankfully her cousin sensed her unease and jumped in. “Hey Shawn, long time no see. What can we do for you?”
“Well I was hoping you could help me with a slight problem I’m having… might get you in trouble though. Maybe I shouldn’t ask,” he hedged though there was a twinkle in his eyes.
Solie's eyes lit up at the mention of trouble, a wicked smile curling the corners of her mouth. “You should know by now that Trouble is our middle name,” she returned rubbing her hands together gleefully.
“Before we agree to anything,” Rose cut in drawing a glare from her cousin and a mock pout from her former crush. “I think that you should tell us what exactly you have in mind. By now you know that neither of our fathers are too keen on us drawing too much attention to ourselves, though I don't think we're making much headway on that one,” she muttered ruefully recalling the run in with Edge and later with Orton.
Shawn flashed the strawberry blonde a winning smile that still made her a little weak in the knees. “Oh c'mon Red, live a little,” he encouraged. “We don't know how long you'll be here before the dynamic duo decide to send you two packing again. Why not have some fun while you're here?”
The young woman sighed. “I know I’m going to regret this but you two have me outvoted. What exactly did you have in mind?”
The show stopper laughed, “I told Flair I could charm you into helping us out.”
“Ric is involved in this too? Now I know we’re in trouble,” the green eyed girl shook her head.
Lee playfully punched her cousin, “Hush. Now what are getting into?”
“Actually nothing that should get you into too much trouble,
at least not with your dads. You know with Steph being on maternity leave then
Hunter’s rehab, we really haven’t had a chance to give them a real party to
celebrate becoming parents. We thought that while Vince is still doing so much
cross brand promotions a big surprise bash was in order.”
Rose raised an eyebrow, “So you just want help planning a surprise party?”
Shawn’s smile wavered, “Not exactly. We already have most of that stuff
covered. It’s been in the works for a while. We just weren’t sure how to pull
it off til now. I was thinking with you two’s skills you could sneak Aurora out
of her playpen for us and hide her. Then Steph and Hunter will have to go
looking for her and the last room I’ll take them to check out will be the one
where everyone is waiting to jump out and yell surprise.”
“Have you lost your mind,” Rose screeched. “I think our dads would object to our deaths which is the end result of this little plan. Hunter would kill us and you know he wouldn’t have a hard time finding us.”
Lee's brows pulled together a thoughtful look on her face. “Not necessarily,” she said after a moment. “If we do this right we could get away with it.”
Ro looked from her cousin to Shawn shaking her head. “You're both crazy!”
“Duh! You didn't just meet us,” Solie returned absently still thinking this plan through.
The Heartbreak Kid smiled triumphantly. He knew that look on the young woman's face very well. It meant that she had a plan that she thought would work. Having seen the girls’ work he knew if Rose gave the okay they could pull this off without a hitch. “I knew that I could count on you,” he told them.
“Don't count your chickens before they're hatched,” Rose warned. “We still haven't heard Lee's brilliant idea yet.”
Solie looked from Shawn to Ro smiling broadly now. She figured she had all the bases covered so that her cousin couldn’t nix this plan. “Here's the deal. I, along with someone else, preferably not someone in on this party deal, go to where they're keeping Aurora with Rose not too far behind.”
The strawberry blonde nodded. So far there wasn't too much too it and it seemed pretty straightforward but knowing her cousin like she did the other girl was bound to pull out the big guns soon. She wasn't disappointed when Lee picked up where she left off.
“The only thing that I think we might have trouble with is getting the other party out of the picture, but I'll work on that. Once he or she is out of the way Rose and I abscond with the baby to await the worried parents,” she finished with a grin.
Rose folded her arms over her chest and frowned at her cousin. “And how exactly did you plan on getting this other person out of the picture.” The strawberry blonde shook her head at the abashed look on her cousin's face. “That's what I thought. What happened to keeping a low profile?”
“I will be keeping a low profile,” she returned hotly. “I can always play it off like the door hit them knocking them for a loop and I only left to find help for them.”
Her cousin tapped her chin thoughtfully. “Well if you are going to play it that way, then maybe I shouldn’t be present when you actually disappear with the baby.”
The gray eyed girl frowned at that. “You aren’t going to
help?”
Raising a hand to forestall any disagreement Rose quickly added, “I didn’t say
that. But follow with me. If you knock the person that goes with you out and
then disappear with the baby you’re obviously going for the angle that someone
knocked out your friend and took off with the baby and possibly you as well. If
I come into the room after you what are the chances of Hunter at least not
picking up my fresh scent or barring that someone seeing us leave together. It
would make more sense for you to…” she rubbed her head sighing, “I can’t
believe I’m saying this but it would make more sense for you to knock your
companion out; once you’re alone with the baby grab her and casually stroll out
before anyone knows anything is going on. You meet me somewhere and pass Aurora
off while going in a different direction to confuse the trail. We’ll make plans
to meet up wherever Shawn is having this party at a predetermined time. All we
have to do then is wait…. And hope they don’t kill us.”
Solie flew across the room to hug her cousin tightly. She flashed Shawn a million watt smile. “I told ya Trouble was our middle name,” she said a bit smugly.
The Heartbreak Kid rubbed his chin thoughtfully his eyes twinkling merrily. “And here I thought it was Elizabeth and Marie.” He shrugged comically letting his hands slap his thighs. “Guess you learn something new every day.” He strolled over to the girls wrapping an arm around each of them kissing each on the temple. “Thank you girls for doing this...and I promise to run interference should the need arise.”
Rose frowned at her former crush, “That's not very encouraging Shawn,” she told him.
“Oh c'mon Ro how bad could it be,” Lee asked good naturedly.
The strawberry blond turned to her cousin an incredulous look on her face. “Did you miss every episode of Buffy? Don't you know you've guaranteed this to turn out badly.”
“Whatever,” Solie countered rolling her eyes. “But in order for the worst to happen they'd have to catch me first...and since we've got Shawn at our backs I'll at least live long enough for them to calm down and realize they don't want me dead...just hurt really badly.”
Rose shook her head shoulders shaking from suppressed laughter. “I'm never gonna understand you,” she muttered affectionately.
