Courting Destruction: Chapter Seven/?

Solie rolled her eyes heavenward silently asking what she had done to deserve the idiot at her side.  He had done nothing but complain since the time she had spotted him in catering alone.  The young woman figured he would make the perfect patsy.  He didn't wear the markings of their kind nor was he other despite his manner of dress.

“Did she tell you what she wanted to see me about,” Kevin Thorn asked for what must have been the millionth time in the last couple of minutes.

The platinum blonde stopped, whirling on her companion with eyes ablaze.  “For the last fuckin' time...I haven't got a clue why she wants to speak with you.  She asked me to come get you because her PA was busy with something else.”

“Okay, jeez,” he held his hands up in surrender.  “You don't have to get all bitchy.”

“Wrong species,” Lee muttered under her breath.

“What was that,” he asked curiously.

“Nothing I'm going to repeat,” she told him grumpily.

The Dracula wannabe would have pressed the point but as luck would have it, they arrived at Stephanie’s door before he could.  The pair knocked on the door only to have it opened by Stephanie’s assistant.

“Can I help you,” the young woman asked.

Lee smiled disarmingly at her. “Hey, I found him.” At the girl’s surprised look she added, “Steph wanted to speak to Mr. Thorn. She asked me to find him because you were busy.”

The PA sighed. “Well that I can believe. The woman runs me ragged.” She paled adding, “But I didn’t say that. Anyway are you sure Steph wanted to see him? She’s not here right now.”

“Yeah I’m sure. Could you find her for us? I’d hate to get you in trouble for her missing a meeting,” Solie added. She noticed the young woman looking back into the room at the playpen there. “I could watch Aurora while we wait. Steph wouldn’t mind.”

The girl looked from the baby back to the pair hesitantly before heading out the door telling them, “She just went down for her nap but she’s a sound sleeper. I will be right back. I’m pretty sure where the boss went.  Don’t go anywhere.”

“We won't leave,” Solie promised with another reassuring smile for the frazzled looking personal assistant.

The young woman exited the room hurrying in the direction she had last seen her boss go.

Solie turned to Kevin then sighing. She only hoped she had enough patience left to get through this ordeal.  Of course the thought of knocking the arrogant little bugger on his ass was enough to keep her anger in check.  “You might as well take a seat it looks like we may be here a while.”

While he strolled around the room the young blonde searched for the diaper bag.  Spotting it she walked over to it checking to make sure she had formula, diapers, wipes, and anything else she might need while little Aurora was in her care.  Picking it up Solie carried it over to the door dropping it down.  “So I know where it is in case she wakes up,” she explained when Thorn shot her a confused look, vaguely disgusted.

Lee grabbed the doorknob with her left hand as she balled up the right.  At that moment she heard the knock that was her signal to begin.  She slowly opened the door watching Kevin's face as she did so.  He was totally unprepared when her fist connected with his jaw.

Thorn crumpled to the floor in a heap making Solie frown at him.  She kicked him none too gently to make sure he wasn't just playing dead, so to speak.  “Vampire my ass,” Solie muttered sourly shaking her head.

Once she was sure the coast was clear she went over to the playpen and the sleeping child.  Gently she lifted the baby out cradling her carefully.  She made one stop at the door to grab the diaper back and slipped out of the room with none the wiser about what had really just happened.

Lee quickly made her way through the back hallways, taking several turns and even retracing her own steps a couple times before meeting up with Rose back by the loading dock.

“Ro,” the gray eyed girl whispered wandering around empty equipment boxes, “tag already.” The strawberry blonde popped up from inside a crate and grinned at the shocked look on her cousin’s face. “Very funny. You could have made me drop the baby. You’ve been hanging around your dad too much.”

The green eyed girl shook her head, “No you wouldn’t have dropped her. It took you long enough though.”

Rolling her eyes the other girl explained, “I was trying to cover the trail so Hunter doesn’t find you before he’s supposed to.”

Climbing out of the crate Rose smiled, “Check.” Reaching over to grab the baby and her things the young woman added in a sing song voice, “Got to delay Hunter’s hunting.” She giggled and motioned for Lee to head in the opposite direction. “I’ll see you at the party.”

“Just don't get caught before then,” Solie hissed running off toward the medical trainers to give her story some credibility.  She jogged down the corridors without clear direction even though she probably could have made the trip in less time if she hadn't been worried about being discovered before the appointed time.

She was so focused on getting to the trainers and maintaining her cover story that she wasn't really watching where she was going.  So she was totally unprepared to dodge the door that opened before her.  The force of hitting it knocked her on her ass and had pinpoints of light dancing in her vision.

Distantly she could hear male voices bickering, “Jesus Jeff, did you just have to fling the door open like that?”

“How was I supposed to know that someone was going to be charging down the hall like that,” came the other man's annoyed voice.

Shaking her dual colored head to clear the cobwebs she looked up only to quickly shut her eyes.  Apparently the hit to the head had caused momentary double vision with a nausea kicker.  She took a deep breath her mouth half open to capture both their scents at once.  Her eyes snapped open as she looked from one to the other with wide eyes.  Impossible her mind screamed though a second scenting produced the same results.  These young men were Kin.  Scrabbling back on the concrete might have been impossible to do but she managed it with ease.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” the dark haired man said concern creeping into his tone.  “We're not gonna hurt you.  Why don't you just tell us what happened.”

Solie rubbed the sore spot on her forehead trying to get her brain to function beyond the rapidly dulling pain.  “I was on my way to the trainers,” she managed to get out.

“What? Why,” the other man asked.

“There was a knock on the door and when I opened it, it was shoved back. It hit Mr. Thorn and he was knocked out,” she paused for dramatic effect thanking her lucky stars that she had studied theatrics at her uncle's knee.  “I guess I must have been knocked out as well because when I came to the baby was gone,” she finished tearfully.

“Baby? What baby,” the man with multicolored hair asked.

“Aurora…” The young woman started.

”Stephanie and Hunter’s baby? They’ll go ballistic,” the dark haired man screeched. “Jeff, help her get up. We need to contact security and get the exits shut down.”

As the other man reached out a hand to help Solie up, she saw the mark on his wrist confirming what her nose had already told her.   He gave her an odd look as she hesitated. Sighing, the young woman put her hand in his and allowed him to pull her up.  The trio headed back down the hallway, grabbing a passing medic to take with them for Kevin in case he was still down. They walked into Stephanie’s office to find that full blown chaos had erupted.  Thorn was rubbing his jaw and complaining to another medic who was already on the scene. Hunter was reading the riot act to security and Steph herself was on the verge of tears.

When she saw Solie she rushed over to pull her into a hug. “Thank god you’re okay.  You don’t have Aurora with you do you?” The young mother asked looking around her at the men trailing her.

Lee shook her head, “No. She was gone when I came to. I was trying to find help. Any clues where she might be?”

“No, if we knew we wouldn’t be asking you,” Hunter snapped drawing near.

His wife turned to him, “Don’t yell at her. It won’t help find Aurora and she was obviously hurt too. Have you been checked by the medic,” she asked turning back to her friend.

“I’m okay,” the gray eyed girl shook her head to wave off the approaching medic. “Any idea where we should start looking?”

“We aren’t looking anywhere. You’re going to sit down and be checked out before your dad has my head.” The brunette told her.

Hunter nodded, “Steph is right. You can’t help us if you’re injured yourself.”

Solie knowing that look on her former crush's face knew better than to argue.  Grudgingly she let Matt and Jeff guide her over to one of the couches.  He checked her vision then asked the usual asinine questions to gauge whether or not she had a concussion.  When the young medic reached for the leather covering on her left arm she grabbed his hand in a vice like grip.  “Take that off and you really won't have to worry about what my father's going to do to you because there won't be anything left,” she threatened in a low voice.

Startled the young man drew back looking to the worried parents for direction.  Stephanie came over placing a hand on the other girl's shoulder.  “It's okay Lee, I promise he is only making sure there aren't any secondary injuries.  Sweetie, just let him do his job,” Steph encouraged with a gentle squeeze.

“We shouldn't be sitting around here worrying about whether or not I have injuries,” she ground out hoping to sidetrack everyone into forgetting her little outburst.  “We should be looking for Aurora.”  Solie dropped her head in her hands.  “Gawd, Steph I'm so sorry...I honestly didn't think something like this would happen.  I just figured it was another one of the guys coming to see you. I had no idea,” she trailed off managing to squeeze out a few tears, silently applauding herself managing to sound so sincere.

The young mother sat down beside her friend and hugged her. “It wasn’t your fault Lee. You’re right though. We need to stop sitting here blaming ourselves and find my daughter. Any word from Security?” She looked up at her husband who was on the phone again. He shook his head. “Damn then we’ll have to start looking ourselves. I refuse to believe that they made it out of the building with her. I would sense it. She’s close… I just know it.” Shaking a finger at the men before they could disagree she added, “Don’t doubt a mother’s bond.”

Hanging up the phone Hunter walked over to his wife as she stood and gave her a brief hug. “I’d never doubt your instincts honey. But if we’re going to make this a serious search we should split up. Guys are you willing to help,” he asked the trio of men.

“Of course,” Jeff responded with his brother nodding his assent.

Kevin on the other hand looked a bit green. “Don’t you need someone to stay here in case they send a ransom note or something?”

The worried father sneered at him, “Yeah sure. You do that. I’m sure if they want to communicate with us, it will be a lot easier for them to slip a note in with the guy they knocked out the first time standing guard on the room. The rest of you, let’s split up into teams.”

Steph nodded, “Okay but I don’t think you and I should be on the same team….” She looked at him meaningfully adding, “PARENTS instincts will be a factor for both of us so if we go in opposite directions we’ll double our chances of picking up the trail… as it were.” She smiled over at the imitation vampire who looked a bit confused.

Her husband nodded. “Sounds like a plan.  Then I’ll take Lee with me. That way I can make sure she doesn’t get hurt. She’ll be safer than staying here with him,” he added pointing at Thorn.

“Hey it was an ambush,” he pouted.

“Whatever,” the worried mom waved him away. “That leaves Matt Jeff and I. How do we split up?”

The older Hardy boy shook his head. “We don’t. We’ll both go with you and if we reach a secondary point where we need to split up we’ll do it then. That way one of us guys can stay with you for protection.”

”Good plan,” Triple H patted him on the back before helping Solie up as they all headed out the door.
