Rating: PG-13 for now for language and violence. It will probably move to R in later chapters though due to more graphic violence and sex so if that is going to be a problem you might want to steer clear of this story.
Notes: This is going to a story that is largely based in the WWE with some paranormal elements. We are playing a bit loose with time lines of past WWE events and ages of stars as we see fit and will be trying to remain true to the characters in some cases rather than what we know of their real personal lives. If that is a problem, stop here.
Courting
Destruction: Chapter 4/?
The girls walked past security thankful for the temporary ID badges Mr. McMahon had kindly sent them. They headed directly into the talent area anxious to see who was around. The pair hadn’t really visited many shows since back when they were giggling fifteen year olds. They were hoping to see a few familiar faces and maybe meet a few of the guys they had only seen on television before their dads scared everyone away.
The first friend they saw was Ric Flair. The girls walked up
to him as he yelled down the hallway, “One more trick Edge and I’m putting you
in a figure four you’ll never get out of.”
Rose looked down the hallway to see the “Rated R Superstar” himself making a
hasty retreat. She grinned as she turned to the older man, “Is he really as
much of an annoying asshole as he appears to be on camera?”
The Nature Boy turned to see who had asked and frowned for a minute until he
got a good look at the pair and their ID badges. Then he grinned and pulled
both of them into a hug.
The girls returned his hug grateful to find a friendly face so soon. Though neither had said it they had been worried about running into the newer faces simply because most would assume they were wayward fans rather than temporary employees of the WWE. Their fathers had somehow managed to convince the owner that having the girls on the payroll would be a good idea.
Solie was all for it as long as it meant that she wouldn't be in the spotlight. While she did at times wish she was as well known as her father she knew first hand what that cost him. He had little to no personal life that fans didn't think they had a right to talk or know about. She was secretly hoping that she got assigned to the magazine staff since that was where her heart lied.
Grey eyes watched as Rose continued to charm Flair. She knew that her cousin would be well suited, despite her protests, to security. It might sound strange but the strawberry blonde saw more than people thought she did, often catching things that others overlooked. Her build often left others unprepared for her strength. More than one man had gone home limping because he hadn't had the good sense to know that when Rose said no that was exactly what she meant.
Deep down though Solie figured that despite her wants or wishes both her cousin and herself would be placed wherever they were needed the most. Her best guess was ring crew as it would be something that would need to be done quickly and efficiently.
She was brought out of her reverie by the sound of her uncle's booming voice, “There you two are. I thought I told you to stick close.”
“You did,” Solie responded. “You just didn't specify who we were supposed to stick close to.” She gave him a dazzling smile.
“A mistake we won't make again,” her father ground out.
“Damn,” Rose muttered earning a giggle from her cousin and glares from both her father and uncle.
Flair put a friendly arm around both the girls and looked at their fathers. “Come on. They aren’t fifteen anymore. Surely they don’t need a chaperon now. Besides they were just saying hi to their Uncle Ric after all.” He winked at the girls before turning his dazzling smile on the two men before him. One quick glance at their matching scowls and he knew that his charm was not making any kind of dent in their armor tonight. He removed his arms from the girls and stepped back. “Well it was good to see you both. I think Carlito was looking for me to go over our match.”
The green eyed dancer turned to follow the man, “Hey I’d like to meet him.”
Her father grabbed her arm, “Oh no you wouldn’t. You two need to get prepped on what you’re going to be doing here. Follow me.”
Rose’s father led the pair down the hallway toward an open doorway. They never would have guessed who would be waiting for them when they got inside.
Solie walked in a bright smile coming to her face as she stared into the laughing blue eyes of one Stephanie McMahon Helmsely. She practically ran over to the young woman embracing her tightly. As another pair of arms came around her, she knew Rose had joined them.
The three girls separated laughing as they each tried to talk over each other ignoring everyone else in the room. The last time Lee and Ro had seen the youngest McMahon had been when they were fifteen and their respective fathers had decided that the three young women had gotten into too much trouble together.
A throat being cleared reminded the girls that they weren't alone. Solie groaned as she caught sight of one of the few people she would rather have not have run into. It was bad enough the last time he had seen her; she'd been nothing more than a gangly youth and in the midst of her first crush...on him.
Rose covered her mouth with her hand stifling her laughter while Steph made no attempt to do any such thing. The youngest McMahon remembered well the platinum blonde's crush. Ro and Stephanie had given Solie endless grief over it, though if Steph remembered correctly Rose's crush was her husband's tag team partner. She couldn't help smiling as she thought that the fun was just beginning with the three of them back together.
A clattering of crutches from across the room as Triple H stood silenced the girls’ giggles. Rose was the first to find her voice. “Hunter, we were sorry to hear about your injury. I do hope your rehab is going well.”
He grinned at the threesome as he made his way across the room to stand next to Stephanie. “Rumors of my demise are greatly exaggerated.” He winked then added, “but I believe my wife has some business to discuss with the two of you so perhaps your fathers would join me for a cup of coffee down the hall.”
The two older men looked from the girls to Hunter unsure if it was safe to leave them alone.
Steph noticed their hesitance and cleared her throat to get their attention. “I have some script changes that Hunter could go over with you while you wait.” When the pair still didn’t move she got frustrated, “honestly you can’t hover over them constantly. You weren’t this bad before.”
“They weren’t this dangerous before. You know…” Solie’s father began.
Their creative head cut him off with a wave, “Yes I have a pretty good idea what’s going on but I need to talk to my new employees. Thank you.”
Rose looked in shock as her father and uncle left with Hunter leaving the girls alone. She turned to her friend, “You can do that?”
Stephanie smirked knowing that both men were well out of earshot. “Of course I can...though it doesn't hurt that daddy owns the company,” she confessed.
“I gotta tell you that I've never seen anyone talk to them like that...well aside from Ro and I,” Lee said with a chuckle.
“Yeah, well I think had it been anyone else asking to speak with you two, dynamite wouldn't have moved them,” Steph remarked taking a seat at the long conference table. “Please girls have a seat. We can decide where to put you for the time being.”
Rose's head fell to the side her adorable features drawn into a confused frown. “You mean you're not just going to assign some duty like you would for anyone else?”
“Well, I try not to assign people just willy nilly so no. Besides if you're going to be with us for a while it would make more sense for everyone if you were happy with your assignment,” the brunette said with a smile.
Lee frowned as she sat down. “Are we going to be with you for a while? How long exactly is a while anyway?”
Their new boss and long time friend looked from one girl to the other, “What have your dads said?”
The strawberry blonde shrugged, “Not a lot. They showed up
at school after we had a minor… mishap…”
The brunette raised an eyebrow, “I love you guys but a minor mishap is
forgetting to pay a parking ticket or maybe leaving the water sprinklers on all
night and they flood the lawn. I think setting off a spontaneous fire in full
view of normals at a party and putting out the electricity on an entire block
of campus ranks a bit higher than that.”
Lee growled, “Okay we screwed up. We admit that. It still seems a bit extreme to take us out of school this close to graduation over it, especially with some lame excuse about it being for our safety. What are they going to do? Teach us how to control our powers? Take care of any accidents we create. Honestly if we’re so dangerous why put us in a situation where we are going to be around large crowds in enclosed spaces like the arena shows?”
“We wouldn’t have agreed to you joining the company if we were worried that you would hurt bystanders. Yes I think they intend to teach you some methods to help control your emerging powers but there is more to it than that.” The young executive bit her lip, “You know development comes in a lot longer stages for our kind than your average human right? There are several stages and different things you need to do at each stage to get a handle on the powers that accompany the growth. I think your dads think….” She blushed then sighed, “You don’t have any close female relatives to talk to do you?”
“Honey, you've known us a long time now...don't you think if we had someone to go to we would,” Solie asked the first hints of fear tightening her gut.
The brunette ran her fingers through her hair. “I thought as much but well this isn't exactly what I wanted to discuss,” she said with a sigh.
Rose patted the other girl's arm. “We know honey but you're the only one we know for a fact isn't going to lie to us or tiptoe around a delicate subject.”
Stephanie raised her head making eye contact with the strawberry blonde. “How do you know this is one of the delicate subjects,” she questioned.
Solie rolled her eyes. “Steph honey, first our fathers have been dropping mad hints about more going on then we see and second when you brought this up you were blushing like crazy so it's got to be one of those topics fathers hate to talk about with their little girls.”
“Not to mention you waited until after our fathers had left the room to even broach this subject,” Rose interjected her green eyes full of sympathy.
“Bet you never thought you'd be giving the birds and the bees talk so soon did ya,” Lee asked her grey eyes alive with humor as she kicked her feet up onto the table.
Steph's mouth fell open. “How did you know...” she trailed off.
Ro and Lee shared a laugh at that. “Honestly Steph, we may not be so swift on the uptake some days but even we know that when our fathers refuse to tell us what's going on it has to do something with sex...or at the very least the opposite sex.”
Solie dropped her feet to the floor her normally cheerful face serious. “Steph, I know we're putting you in a tough spot here, but if we had any other options open to us don't you think we would have explored them?” She held up a hand when the brunette opened her mouth. “We have a general idea of what's supposed to happen but it's the specifics that we're missing.”
“And so help me god, if you give us directions on sex I will hurt you Steph,” Rose chimed in.
The girls shared a laugh at that. It wasn't so much because it was funny but more because it was a tension breaker, something that they all needed right at that moment. The brunette was slightly disappointed that their first time back together they were forced into a fact finding mission.
Their old friend smiled, “Check, no birds and bees explanation. You know how you got here and how to make more; thank heavens because I didn’t really want to explain that to you. Um who did… no wait. I don’t think I want to know. It’s a visual I don’t need if it’s who I think it was.”
The green eyed girl sighed, “Steph you’re stalling.”
She shrugged unrepentantly. “You would be too if the situation was reversed. Okay I’ll lay it on the line. My best guess is that your dads have realized that it’s time for you two to start looking for mates or mates will find you.”
“What,” Rose screeched. “You can’t be serious Steph. I mean I know you’re happy with Hunter and all but well…why would our dads want to marry us off now? Doesn’t that sound a bit old world to you?”
The brunette rubbed the bridge of her nose searching for an
explanation the pair would understand. “It’s not so much that they want to
marry you off. They are just trying to look out for you and protect you. If you
find your true mates they can help you harness those new powers you’ve
developed.”
Lee interrupted, “So that’s the answer? We can’t be controlled so pass us off
to someone who can? I can’t believe you condone this.”
Their friend sighed. “It’s not like that and you know too it
if you’d calm down a minute. It’s not about someone controlling you, it’s about
finding a partner that you can team up with…. Work together… that’s all there
is to it…mostly…”
The strawberry blonde latched on to that immediately, “Mostly? What else is
there that you aren’t telling us?”
Sighing the older girl confessed, “They could have been worried about your safety for more reasons than you think. Not only could you cause more little accidents as you called them but you will soon be attracting more attention if you aren’t already. Like calls to like, power to power…. Your budding abilities are sort of like a beacon in the darkness to our kind, especially males who are often looking for more power…. Not all of our kind take no for answer.”
Rose nodded having had some inkling that it was something like that. She wasn't happy about having to find out what was really going on through a friend. They should have been catching up on gossip and looking at photos of Stephanie's baby girl.
Solie scratched at her scalp swallowing her anger, something that was more difficult for her than most would imagine. For once her brain overruled her emotions and she was able to think without being too hostile about it. “Okay, that makes sense...I don't like it, but then again no one ever said life was fair.” The corner of her mouth turned up. “At least this time the phrase life's a bitch and then you marry one isn't appropriate...present company excluded of course.”
“It better be,” Steph retorted throwing a scrap of paper at that platinum blonde. “As much fun as this wasn't, it still doesn't get us down to the business of finding you something to do while you're here,” she reminded the girls.
“True,” Lee agreed. “But before we move on...please Steph just bear with me,” she said at the brunette's pained look. Solie bit her lip nervously, grey eyes watching her fingernail scratch absently on the tabletop. Finally she raised her eyes to one of her dearest friend's. “Can we come to you if we have any more questions?”
Stephanie sat there completely and utterly stunned for a moment. She couldn't believe that either of these girls felt the need to ask that question. It made her wonder if she had changed so much that they were no longer sure of her loyalty. Some of what she was feeling must have shown on her face because Rose spoke.
“Steph, we're not doubting you or your friendship. We just need to know that we're not going to put you in a difficult position. You have already gone through this so you may be able to offer us some insights that our fathers just can't.”
“Honey, I never meant to imply that you weren't a good friend,” Solie said gripping the brunette's hand and giving it a gentle squeeze. “I just know that right now I'm still absorbing this information and come tomorrow I may have a million questions for you. I just wanted to make sure that this wasn't going to cause any of us a problem if we're all going to be working together.”
The brunette smiled at the girls reassured by their heartfelt words. “Of course you can. Trust me when this was laid on me I felt much like Lee does right now. I was angry and bitter and swore I would never let it happen to me.”
“And yet not only did you let it happen you even have a child to show for it,” Solie reminded the other girl a grin in place. “Who by the way we haven't seen...not even pictures.” She turned to her cousin. “Aren't first time parents forever showing off pictures of their child?”
Rose bit back a smile as she appeared to give the matter some serious thought. “I do believe that you're right there Lee. They're usually showing off the child to all and sundry even if said child is as ugly as the day is long,” she returned playing along.
“All right you two,” Stephanie said throw her best glare at them, which they blithely ignored. “You better remember this because I will be using it against you later,” she threatened.
The trio laughed at that glad that they had cleared the air. It surprised them a bit to find that even though years and circumstances had separated them they were able to pick up their friendship right where they left off. The rest of their time together was spent discussing what they'd like to do and seeing if there was an opening. By the time Rose and Solie's fathers came to collect the girls they were reminiscing about their adventures and misadventures the last time they'd been together. The girls left Steph with the promise to come see her first thing in the morning so they could finalize the job situation.
