Courting Destruction: Chapter 8/?

Rose cooed to the small infant cradled in her arms.  She was so precious; her little face so angelic in sleep.  Steph and Hunter both had to be going nuts at the thought of losing their child.  Ro had a pang of guilt at being responsible for their distress.

She wondered how her cousin was holding up on her end of the bargain.  She knew that it had to be going pretty well as she hadn't received any phone calls to warn her about a change of plans.  The strawberry blonde was in the room set aside for the surprise party. So far she and Aurora were the only ones in the room, which suited her just fine. The last thing she wanted to do was try to explain why she had the Helmsley infant.

Green eyes shot to the door as it was slowly opened.  A smile spread across her face as Shawn ducked into the room quickly closing the door behind him.  An answering grin broke over his features as he got a look at the tiny bundle the young woman was holding.

“I take it that it went off without a hitch then,” he asked coming over to her to look down at the child.

“Yeah, at least the first part did,” Rose answered.  “I just hope that Lee was able to sell her end of the story.”

The Heartbreak Kid chuckled at that.  “Oh I believe she did.  I saw her in one of the corridors telling a sob story to the Hardys.  If I hadn't known the plan I might have believed her too.”

Smiling the girl added, “I’m not surprised. It’s why I was okay with her doing that end of it. She’s a lot better….actress than I am.”

”Oh is that what they’re calling it these days,” he asked with an amused smirk. Reaching for Aurora he added, “Here, let me take her for a few minutes so you can stretch. The others should be arriving soon.”

The young woman stood and looked around at the decorations. It looked like Toys ‘R Us had exploded all over the room.  She walked over to the snack table and got a bottle of water then turned back to look at Shawn grinning at the little bundle in his arms. She just hoped this plan didn’t explode in their faces.

Solie was thinking the same thing as she steered Hunter away from the correct path for the fourth time convincing him she thought she saw someone go the other way.  He was gruffer than usual and getting worse every moment they didn’t find his daughter. She blanched when she heard him mutter something about calling the cops in to help.

The pair turned down another hallway and ran into Steph with the Hardy brothers still in tow.

The now frantic mother looked from them to the hallway beyond them, “Did you find anything yet?”

Hunter walked over to her and gave her a hug rubbing her back soothingly, “No but we will.  Lee thought she saw someone come this way.”

“There’s no one this way. We’ve searched this whole area.” Matt told them.

“Yeah we would have seen anyone that came by.” Jeff agreed.

Triple H turned from the brothers back towards the way Lee was guarding, “Then I guess I know which way we’re all headed.” He grabbed his wife’s hand and pointed at the other young woman to turn around.

Solie tapped out a rhythm on her thigh a sure sign, if anyone was paying attention, that she was nervous and desperately trying not to show it.  She looked down at the watch on her right hand and breathed a little easier. All she had to do was stall them for a couple more minutes; then Shawn would be coming to her rescue.

The sound of familiar angry voices had her lagging toward the back of their little entourage.  Just what she didn't need right now another run in with Orton and Edge.  Well she wouldn't have minded speaking with Edge again; Randy was a whole other kettle of fish.  There was something about the young man that instantly grated on her nerves while at the same time attracting her like a moth to a flame.

Lee ran her fingers through her hair wondering if the others would notice her absence.

“Is there some reason you’re way back there,” Hunter asked suspiciously.

She sighed harshly a faint blush coloring her cheeks.  The young woman looked pointedly at where the voices were coming from hoping that would clue the rest in to her discomfort.

Stephanie took one look at her and sighed as well.  “Oh Lee please tell me you didn't do something stupid on your first day back,” she pleaded.

“It so wasn't my fault,” Solie exclaimed suddenly feeling fifteen again.  “He came in screaming at Rose, and you know that shit don't fly with me.  He threatened her.”

“What do you mean threatened her?  Who threatened her,” Triple H growled.

“Randy told Rose that he would have her fired,” Lee tried to clarify.

Confused Jeff asked, “Why would he do that?”

The platinum blonde threw her hands up in the air.  “I think it had something to do with the fact that she mentioned overhearing a conversation he was having about Edge.”

Hunter rubbed his forehead.  “I give up. This is giving me a headache and isn't helping us find our daughter.”

The worried father turned around and nearly bumped into the approaching Rated RKO Tag team.

“What the hell…” Edge started to ask the man but one look at Triple H’s face had Randy cutting his partner off before he could be mauled.

“What’s wrong big guy? Anything we can help with?”

“My daughter is missing. Have either of you seen anyone running around with a baby or have you been too busy bickering like a couple of old biddies to notice,” he growled out.

“Well actually, I…” Orton stammered before noticing Solie. “Hey you. You’re new. Where’s your friend?” Turning back to Hunter he added, “Honestly new employees should be the first ones questioned if you ask me.”

“It’s a good thing we aren’t asking you then,” Steph told the man. “She and her cousin certainly had nothing to do with Aurora’s disappearance. But if you’d like I can introduce you to their fathers so you can take it up with them later.  In the mean time, if you aren’t helping us you’re hindering us. Get out of my way,” the mother growled pushing past the men.

Solie had to fight the immature impulse to stick her tongue out at a stunned Randy.  She knew she had bigger concerns than gloating over the fact that she had the boss at her back.  She had to keep the worried parents from finding their child before the predetermined time...and so help her if Shawn didn't show up soon she was bound to do something drastic to stall things.

As she was about to pass the Legend Killer, he reached out gripping her elbow in a bruising hold.  Lee was jerked to a sudden halt and it seemed to take the others a moment to realize she wasn't right behind them.  His piercing blue eyes bored into her grey depths.  “We aren't finished, not by a long shot,” he said in a low menacing voice.

She stepped up close their noses almost touching.  “You don't let go of that arm I'm gonna feed you yours,” she promised unnerved by the reaction her body seemed to be having at his nearness.  She paled considerably when she saw his pupils dilate and his nostrils subtly flare.  Her heart froze as she realized that here was another of her kind.

He licked his lips as if he just tasted something sweet, the look on his face nothing short of arrogant.  “You really think you can,” he purred his hold loosening to allow him to stroke his fingers along the skin of her arm.

Lee took the opportunity to snatch her arm back glaring at him.  “I know I can,” she told him taking a couple steps back.  It was just to be safe, she told herself, not because he scared the unholy hell out of her.  She was totally unaware that she had kept back peddling as he approached until she felt something bump into her from behind.

A quick glance showed it to be a very curious Jeff Hardy.  She stayed right in front of him because he had been kind to her before, therefore, in her mind, was safe.  Unconsciously she turned into the younger Hardy seeking protection from the man in front of her.  The multicolor haired young man seemed momentarily surprised by this development but soon slid his arms around her waist resting his chin on her shoulder,  a clear indication that he would back her whatever trouble she encountered.

“Don't get involved Hardy this doesn't concern you,” Randy growled his blue eyes narrowed on the other man.

“As of right now if it concerns her it does concern me,” Jeff returned smirking at Orton.  “Besides, I do believe she's made her intentions quite clear.”

Randy made as if to lunge at the pair when he was hauled back by his tag team partner.  “You don't wanna do that man,” Edge told his friend pushing him back down the hall.  Turning back to the young woman he said, “If you still want that article why don't you come find me when you've lost the guard dogs.”  He flashed both Hardys an evil smile before dragging Randy down the hall.

Lee stood in the hallway watching them go. She was still a bit shaken though she couldn’t help being a bit thrilled that she might get her interview with Edge after all. That was assuming she survived tonight. She turned to see the two brothers eying her strangely.

“What,” she asked.

“Are you okay?  Stephanie mentioned your dad being near. We could get him for you if you want,” Matt told her.

She shook her head. “I’m fine. The jerk just surprised me is all. We need to help find Aurora. Which way did Steph and Hunter go?”

Matt looked over to Jeff who just shrugged so the older brother told her, “They took the next left down the hallway. I think he said it was the way you had come from.”

“Great,” she growled hustling to catch up with the pair.
