| The Mardy Jug Band (sometimes spelt Mardi Jug Band) evolved from a group of guys who used to turn up at the open night at the Mardy Hotel, Gorseinon, Swansea, Wales. Basically, it's an acoustic band who use amplifiers to boost the sound, so no deafening music! Line up of the band has varied between 4 and 11 - depending on who turns up at gigs. Nowadays, the band will usually be the guys mentioned below. Because the members of the band have other sources of income (proper jobs!) they usually play entirely for fun and are regularly heard around the South Wales area playing for charities, fundraisers, and just for the hell of it. Regular band members are: "Brynmill" Phil Andrew, picking guitar, blues harp (don't even think about calling it a gob-iron) and vocals. Mark "Mr Rock and Roll" Smith bodran, jug, and organiser of the Mardy sessions Bob "The Throb" Edwards bass guitar, has been known to do a few Jake Thackray numbers with acoustic guitar but has never mastered the art of playing bass and singing. When not playing, he can be found at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, where he works as a volunteer. Roland Emmanuel mandolins of various sizes, vocals, rhythm guitar. The music is 1920s ish blues with attitude - good footstompin' stuff! A local band manager describes it as Delta/Roots - whatever that is! Everyone in the band can do solo spots where necessary; Roland is in several local bands (mainly with a bluebrass/Cajun feel); Phil is the founder of a trio called the "Philanderers", The Mardy has now beeen redesigned as an open plan pub, so the regular Tuesday night band sessions have ended. Please tell your friends that the National Botanic Garden of Wales at Llanarthne is still open and has no plans to close!
