  • Know the following about the death penalty:  age eligibility requirements in Texas and minimum age set by the Supreme Court; public support for it and  the number of executions today compared to the early decades of the 20th century.

  • Know the four main punishment dispositions used in the U.S. today and which is used most.   E.g. probation
  • Know the case of Furman v. Georgia and  Gregg v. Georgia..  What is the significance of each?
  • Know the differences between a jail and prison
  • What proportion of inmates are reported to be mentally ill?
  • Know the three different jail designs that have evolved through time and the major differences between them.
  • Jails are within what percentage of their rated capacity today. Who are the inmates (for example, pre-trial detainees) 
  • What proportion of jail inmates are females?
  • Know the characteristics of the Auburn style prison
  • Why was the Auburn style prison considered superior to the Pennsylvania style prison?
  • Know the philosophies of punishments beginning on page 4.
