GUIDELINES FOR PRESENTATIONS
CRIMINLOGY 3310
Presentations will be conducted in groups of 2. Choose one of the topics listed below. Topics will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. Starting today, after class, there will be a sign up sheet for assignment of the topics. Presentations will be presented in the order as they appear on the list. In other words, whoever chooses the first topic of murder will be first. If you do not sign up for a topic, I will assign one for you. There is a possibility that you may want to do a particular topic but it has already been taken. It would be a good idea to have a second choice in that case. Presentations will begin about July 14 through the rest of the semester. It is essential that you are prepared to give it on the day you have been scheduled. If you are not, I will have no choice but to give you a zero for your grade.
This project will consist of two parts: an oral presentation for the class and a research paper that is due at the time of the presentation.
Oral presentation: Your assignment will be to teach the class on the topic you have chosen. All students in your group must take part in the presentation. In other words, it will be a group effort. You can use whatever method you feel will get the information to the class in the best manner possible including lecture or discussion or a combination. You must use at least one type of visual aide that could include, poster boards, overhead projector, short video presentations, etc. Be innovative! You are encouraged to reference material outside of your textbook that you think will help the student better understand any concept you may be presenting. In fact, some of the topics do not have enough information in the text for a presentation and outside references is critical. The Internet would be an excellent source. Know your material well enough that you can talk about it rather than just read it. Do not expect to get a high grade if you simply just read verbatim from the text and you put little effort in to the preparation. The presentation should be about 30-35 minutes in length.
Research Paper: Your paper is due at the time you give your presentation. You may choose any topic within the area that you covered in the presentation. For example, if you presented on topic of sexual offenses, you might want to do your paper on date rape. The paper must be at least five typewritten or word-processed pages. You must reference the source of your material. Any format is okay including APPA MLA and Turabian as long as you are consistent throughout your paper.
Grades: You can earn up to 25 points for the paper and 25 points for the presentation for a total of 50 points. All persons in your group will receive the same grade for the presentation portion. Grades will primarily be based on effort, preparation and following instructions.
**PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU ATTEND ALL CLASSES DURING THE WEEKS THE PRESENTATIONS ARE BEING GIVEN. IF YOU MISS A CLASS WITHOUT FIRST GETTING PERMISSION AHEAD OF TIME FROM ME, YOU WILL LOSE 20 POINTS FROM YOUR OVERALL GRADE FOR EACH CLASS YOU MISS
