Compositions - general information

Marc van Delft began to compose when he was about 10 years old.
In his youth, several works were played by Youth-orchestras.
His first serious and great piece was his first Symphony opus 1, which he composed under the guidance of his teacher Peter Schat ('79-'80). The first part was performed by the Dutch Ballet Orchestra in 1981 (conductor: Ed Spanjaard), and got very good revieuws by the press. In this work, Marc van Delft used the 12-tone-technique of Schnberg and Peter Schat. The music was Expressionistic and had a Late-Romantic Character, like Alban Berg for example. In 1982 the National Youth Orchestra played the 'Ouverture opus 5, the four Temperaments' in Italy and Amsterdam, in the famous Concert Building (het Concertge-bouw...). In this piece, Marc van Delft used for the first time an orches-tration-style like for example Ravels' 'Daphnis', or Respighy etc. Influence of Ligeti was to be found in a piece called  "Metamorphosen' opus 4, which was performed by the Dutch Chamber Choir in 1992. Lev Markiz conducted in 1983 the 'Ouverture opus 5' with The Gelders Orchestra. In 1983, Ed Spanjaard conducted the Orchestra-suite opus 6 'The 7 Planets' with the Limburgs Symphonie Orchestra. Also ensembles of the Utrecht Conservatory performed pieces by van Delft (1983-'88). In the years 1990-92 'The Orchestra Variations' opus 18 ('89) were performed by 'Con Brio' (Amsterdam - Iman Soeteman-conductor, and performed in the famous Amsterdam Concert-building!) and 'The Ford Symphony Orchestra' From Keulen (Cologne) (this was the last work in which van Delft used the 12-tone-technique/atonality)
Furthermore, Marc van Delft composed Music for  ensembles, cham-ber- and Choir-music, and a Mass for Choir, Orchestra and Soloists, which were performed during the years '82-2000.
Filmmusic for the short television-film 'Bobby' was composed in 1993. In the summer of 2001 van Delft finished  a piece for the 'Insomnio-ensemble'. Marc van Delft also played his own Piano-pieces at piano-recitals. Most of the mentioned works in this booklet have been played on major radiostations.

Works for Fanfare-orchestra

Many works were written for Fanfare Orchestra, an orchestral form which exist mostly in Holland and Belgium, being an orchestra with Brass-instruments, percussion and saxophones. With the 'Frysk Fanfare Orkest' (Jouke Hoekstra - conductor) many successes were obtained, also at the World Music Contest. About 10 works for Fanfare are to be found on CD. At the WMC's of 1991, 1993, 1997 and 2001 about 10 works have been played. The greatest succes was obtained in 1993, when the Frysk Fanfare Orchestra played the 'American Fantasy' and they got the first prize in the contest. Also their performance of the 'Symphonia' in 1991 at the 'Mini-WMC' when they obtained the first prize was a success. At the WMC's of  1991, 1993, 1997 and 2001, about 10 works were played by several fanfare-orchestras of the
highest calibre.
Many works were played at 'Fanfare Promotion Concerts', also experi-mental pieces like 'Space-music I', in which the orchestra was divided in groups and played around the public. In 1993, 'Crescendo' from Nieuwveen (Danny Oosterman - conducter) played the 'Concert for two bugels and fanfare-orchestra'. At this occassion the composer got a second prize for the composition contest from the 'foundation Fanfare Promotion Concerts'.

Works for symphonic Band

Van Delft did compose many works for symphonic band, simple works, like chorals or andantes, but also very difficult pieces on the highest difficulty grade. The Royal Military Band (The Hague, conductor Pierre Kuypers), did put the 'Ragtime-suite' opus 17 on a CD from publisher 'De Haske'. Van Delft also did write 2 pieces for Orchestras of Heinz Friesen, who won the first prize on the World Music Contest (Kerkrade) with these orchestras: The 'St. Michaels-Symphony' for 'St. Michael' from Thorn, and 'Elegy for the Earth' for the Philharmony from Bocholz. In 1993 'Concordia' from Treebeek (conductor: Harold Bertrand) played: 'Amazonian Dances' (Rainforest-suite). Jouke Hoekstra played in 1993 the 'Oriental Rhapsody' with the 'Stedelijk Harmonie' orchestra from Sneek at a Contest in Trier (Germany). The Orchestra did win the first prize on this occassion. In 2000 van Delft composed 'Images' for Heinz Friesens Orchestra from Loon op Zand.
