The goal of the Audible Project was to create a 100% DLS Level 1 compliant GM sample set that can be used on all DLS compatible sound cards such as Diamond's MX300, based on Aureal's Vortex 2, to Turtle Beach's Daytona, based on S3's SonicVibes. Audible is currently 16.8 MB's so theoretically it will *not* work on the SonicVibes which can only address up to 15(10?) MB PC RAM. Reports of success or failure with different sound card and system memory configurations are desired and welcome. If you don't need 100% DLS 1 compatibility, I suggest downloading the 12 MB Chaos Bank, replacing patches 76, 82, and 124, and converting it to DLS with the latest version of Audio Compositor. Personally, I wouldn't go through the trouble, as TiMidity++, a *free* real-time MIDI renderer, can use SoundFonts. The reason Audible exists is I hadn't discovered that TiMidity++ could do this at the time I began Audible.

Audible was assembled on a Pentium 166 with 64 MB SDRAM. Only the Vortex 1 has been tested and only under Windows NT 4.0 SP5. Audio Compositor 3.3b was used to assemble and modify Audible.

All patches in 'Audible' were obtained from freely available sample sets, most of which were in SF2 format. The percussion bank was derived from the Chaos Bank. Drum kits available include 0, 8, 16, 24, 25, 32, 40, 48, 56 and 127. Bank 0 is a combination of many sample sets including Unison, Musica Theoria, UltraGM+, and, of course, Chaos among many others. About a third of the patches are identical to gm.dls. I would like to replace these for obvious reasons. See gm.txt for details. Instruments with a 'Y' adjacent to them are from other sources.

There should be no missing instruments. I have listened to hundreds of GM files with Audible and have attempted to replace any 'bad' instruments. Feel free to correct any 'errors.' All I ask is that you send me a description of your modifications or make a DLS available for download that includes only the modified patches. Please take the minute that it takes to at least bring to my attention which patch or patches need 'fixing.' A simple e-mail with the respective patch numbers in the subject will do. You can even send me the MIDI file(s) that doesn't sound correctly with Audible.
