About "When They Got Distracted"
In 1994, the main character Dexter Felipe Williams created in the personal comic book When They Got Distracted was Marcus Keith Bartlett, a now 37-year old author who could figure out instantly what people wanted. When he first started in this fictional story, he was 28 years old and was a very popular English teacher who taught a school in his hometown of Annapolis, Maryland. He never seemed to have a problem with anything...until breaking news hit.
In 1997, Bartlett retired to become an author. He moved to Los Angeles, California, to write stories. Then, an evil force sent by the White Witch tried to take over the world—by assigning detention. She also hid a young man in the process.
The evil force known as “D&S” would not tread lightly. They would last for two more years. A boy and a girl were in the story. They were the bullies Marcus tried everything to discipline them, but could not defeat them. The bullies often pushed people around, and called teachers bad names. The two bullies, male and female, were Daniel Strauss, and Shayna Carlson. The two bullies did dress like punks, and they did listen to rock music. They later worked for the White Witch.
In spring of 2000, Marcus got wind of those evil students. To take on the world of gothic rock was what he was going to do. In this finale, he rescued 19-year old Vernon Faust, who looked similar to Jeff Hardy, but Vernon was smaller (5.11cm, or 5'11”) and his eyes were brown rather than green. Maybe what Daniel and Shayna had on possibly inspired Vernon to inspire the youth of the nation? But Vernon didn't like them at all. After a pit opened, animations struck Marcus, but he resisted. He aimed right for the witch, and he fired a color gun. It hit her. She slipped, and the animations died. The witch was making straining sounds, then lost her balance, and fell in the pit, screaming.
And all Vernon could do was laugh. A loud crash was heard, and Marcus replied, saying, “That sounded like Veronica Taylor!”
Having exactly NO idea who Veronica Taylor is, something else happened. An unknown force known as “Mr. McMahon” had fired everyone that used detention as a force, and then he offered a suggestion to Marcus to move to New York. He accepted.
At that time, and one year later, Marcus was introduced to Jeff Hardy, who was in the WWE at the time. This would result in exciting ideas for the next two years.
In 2003, Marcus and Vernon met a new female friend: Rhiannon Slater. Looking like Alison Sweeney from Days Of Our Lives, she was a little shorter than Vernon Faust. She lived in Los Angeles, too. Vernon was an actor at the time.
But on December 19 th , 2003, Marcus came to his Los Angeles home for a break. Watching Days Of Our Lives with his friend Vernon, he saw a woman being attacked and terrorized by a serial killer. After her nightmare occurred, Marcus concluded that a person he once knew, Jeff Hardy, was playing the killer! That's where the movie comes in.
Later that night, he was also introduced to a punk-rock influenced person in a dream he had. His name was Marshall Roberts. He looked like his uncle, Lucas, from Days as well. When Mark and Brooke do a ‘free-tour' of Marshall's house, they go upstairs to his room. They all find rock band posters, and some of the posters also had Jeff Hardy on them. As Samantha Brady, Lucas' friend, was yelling at everyone, they went downstairs immediately, except Marcus. The thoughts of Jeff Hardy would not leave Marcus' mind. He came back down with them…and the dream ended. Marcus woke up at 6:00 AM the next morning, screaming. Maybe he concluded that saying “Veronica Taylor” at the time he saved Vernon probably led to Jeff Hardy's breakout in 2000. Nowadays, some people that young Marcus Bartlett know are true fans of Jeff Hardy...and had no idea what he was going to do next.
With the tenth anniversary coming shortly, from punks to Jeff Hardy, and to the California life, Marcus Bartlett has gone through a lot of changes since 1994. You could say that he has everything all figured out. Marcus Bartlett is known now as an original. Highly obsessed with Jeff Hardy? Not a chance. Inspiring? You bet he is. And that's the life of Marcus Bartlett.
