WHITNEY FAMILY

Joshua Whitney son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Boardman) Whitney was born in Connecticut, Nov. 24, 1748. He married Hannah Greene, daughter of Ebenezer Greene, born in Welton, Fairfield County, Connecticut, Sept. 14, 1748. The children of Joshua and Hannah (Greene) Whitney , born in Connecticut were: Joshua; Sarah who married William Guthrie , Esq. of Bainbridge, Chenango County, NY.;Thomas married Polly Gilbert; William who founded Whitney's Point, NY; John who married Polly Bortell; Hannah who married Deacon Daniel Stowe of Chenango Point, NY. After the Revolution , Joshua and his family left Connecticut and resided in Hillsdale, NY for a short time and had born there: Lucy who married Franklin Morse of Vestal, NY. They made their way thru the Catskills and in 1787, settled in what was then Montgomery County, NY, on the west side of the Chenango river, about two miles above it's junction with the Susquehannah river. This district was later known as Whitney's Flats. Child born to Joshua and Hannah in Whitney's Flats was; Olive who married Christopher Eldredge from Stonington, Connecticut to Chenango Point 1806 and built a house on the south side of the Susquehanna river, opposite it's junction with the Chenango. Through his merchantile business , and operations in real estate and lumber , he amassed a considerable fortune. Mr. and Mrs. Eldredge had six sons and one daughter. Joshua Whitney, the eldest son of Joshua and Hannah (Greene) Whitney, a lad of fourteen when the family moved from Connecticut to the shores of the Chenango river, was destined to become the founder of Binghamton. In 1793, Joshua married Rhoda Jewell, born in 1774. The children of Joshua and Rhoda (Jewell) Whitney born at what is now the present site of Binghamton were: 1. Pamela born Apr. 12, 1794, married General Thomas G. Waterman, Aug. 20, 1813.As a wedding dower she received a house and lot on Court Street. .General Waterman was born in Connecticut, and was a greduate of Yale. As a lawyer he compiled some well known law books. He was a member of the New York Legislature for one year, and of the Senate for four years. He was appointed Judge in 1832. He built the mansion at 71 Front Street in 1818. They were the parents of six sons and four daughters. Among their children were: Rhoda E.who married Judge James White.The White children were all gifted and were as follows: Mrs. Lucy C. Lillie, contributor to "Harper's Magazine;" Mrs. Janett Walker, a concert singer; Mrs. Jennie DelBal, an authoress; and Thomas W. who was for thirty-five years the personal representive of James Gordon Bennett of the "New York Herald". He was a lawyer and compiled many books. He married the daughter of Rev. Dr. Andrews; Joshua W. also a lawyer, lived in Detroit and married the two daughters of Colonel Ira Davenport of Bath, NY. General Waterman also engaged with his brother-in-law Joshua Whitney in large lumber transactions. General and Mrs. Waterman died at the family home on Front Street and are buried in Christ Church yard. They are survived by a number of decendants. 2. Virgil , Sr. born Feb. 5, 1797, married, in 1819, Marcia Doty, a sister-in-law of Mrs. John A. Collier. They were the parents of three sons ; and one daughter, who became the wife of Hon. Rodney A. Ford. A son Virgil married Pamela, daughter of Franklin Whitney. Virgil, Sr. was appointed postmaster in 1832 by President James Monroe and held the office for ten years. The post office was in the Whitney family for thirty years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Whitney , Sr. died at "Marshlands" on Virgil Street. 3. Vincent born May 23, 1799, married Susan Harper of Harpersville, in 1823. They were the parents of Mrs. Lucy Bryant of Buffalo; Mrs. Julia W. Eaton and Miss Kate Whitney both of this city. Vincent Whitney was active in politics and was elected to the New York State Legistlature in 1832 and 1833. Mr. and Mrs. died at the family home Eaton Place and Front Street.4. oegre born Aug. 12, 1801, married Sophia Evans, who was born in Kidderminister, England, May 28, 1806. They werer the parents of five sons and four daughters, all born at Chenango, New York. The sons engaged in the merchantile pursuits except for George, Jr. who became a prominent and highly esteemed lawyer of this city. Mr. and Mrs. George Whitney died at the family home on Court Street. 5. Washington born July 22, 1803, married Caroline , daughter of Rufus Park , in 1832. They were the parents of four sons and two daughters. He was on Governor Clinton's staff. Their son Franklin became a sucessful merchant in New York City. Mr. and Mrs. Whitney died at the family home on Riverside Drive.They are survuved by two grandsons Frederick and Oscar Whitney, and a number of great grandchildren. 6. Franklin born July 1803, married Sept. 12, 1826, Elizabeth, daughter of Hon. Dugald Cameron, of Bath, New York. They were the parents of six sons and six daughters. He owned and operated the "Mills" on Lake Keuka, Steuben County, New York one of the largest lumber industries in the state. Mr. Whitney built a home at 63 Front Street where he resided until his death Sept. 22, 1863. Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Whitney are survived by one daughter, Mrs. Fanny Cameron Whitney-Smith, and her daughter Elizabeth Cameron Whitney-Smith. 7. Joshua born Dec. 17, 1804; married Zarah Evans Dec. 1830. They were the parents of Zarah, wife of Rev. Capen. Joshua inheireted from his father the Richfield Springs estate. The house is connected to a hotel known as the "Springs House", which he afterwards sold and returned to Binghamton. He purchased the "Whitney Place" where he and his wife continued to live and celebrated their golden wedding. His widow survived him , and on her nintieth birday gave a reception assisted by her own and her last social function given by a Whitney at "Whitney Place" .They were the last Whitney's to occupy "Whitney Place " and left no descendents. 8. Rhoda born Apr. 14, 1808 who died in infancy. 9. William Wallace born Sept. 28, 1810; married in 1832, Myra, daughter of Daniel Clark, of New Orleans. They were the parents of two children; William and Rhoda. He died in New Orleans, in 1837and his widow afterwards married Major General Edmund P. Gaines of the United States Army. 10. Mary born Oct. 2, 1812; unmarried, died in Binghamton. 11. Charles born Apr. 1, 1815; married Emily Clark, an English lady, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He was a Shakespear reader and was invited by Queen Victoria to Windsor Castle , where he gave a reading of King Lear. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Whitney are survived by Mrs. Mary Whitney Lawrence and Miss Jennie Olive Whitney. 12. Robert, born Apr. 21, 1818 and died in infancy.
