70 Marcos Volvo 1970

Racing a Marcos since 1991 has had its ups and downs but you cannot deny that the shape which first appeared when I was a raw 18yr old still looks good, which is more than can be said about the driver...  One of just 9 Marcos in New Zealand, the car has been raced extensively since before my ownership.   Although looking a bit secondhand now, the car handles very well and with a standard Volvo 164 engine, goes as expected.

First claim to fame was making the front page of the Nottingham Evening Post in August 1973 after a major disagreement with the UK Prison Service regarding an item on a TV documentary about "Happiness"! That ended my career as a Prison Officer...

First competed in 1970 with a mildly modified Mini Cooper 998cc at an NSCC sprint at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire. Finished about last but the next event gave a class win in the very popular Silverstone Winter Sprint series.

CAR DETAILS

Category 1 - standard, except for the wheels which are now 14" rather than the original 13", giving far less tyre flex and much better handling as a result. The standard Volvo 3 litre engine was rebuilt by By-Gone Autos of Birkenhead, Auckland - who also look after one or two other series cars - and many other classic saloons and sports cars. Proprietor Mal Clark is building a Rover for the series...
Chassis (steel) fully restored 1993 by Ed Vaughan of BiPlus Engineering. Pre 1969 Marcos had a plywood chassis. This car was originally Tangerine, then yellow, and was exported from UK in 1980. No idea of the UK registration but it was built and sold by Hexagon of Highgate (London).
Taken at TACCOC's Whenuapai Classic Race meeting about 1996 1 day before my 50th birthday - and before a few body scars - on the car that is

MY ALL TIME FAVOURITE RACING CARS/DRIVERS

Favourite driver would have to be Graham Hill, followed by (before my time) Raymond Mays who my father named me after. An admirer of Stirling Moss's ability to get into any car and drive it - quickly.

Locally, Peter Brock from Australia. Also admire a local Porsche ace, "Racing Ray Williams" - who has not retired!

prewar  - from an original photograph.

Favourite car(s) would be the undrivable BRM V16s, winning BRM V8s and most ERAs. Also very fond of Ferrari GTO and Aston Martin Zagatos.

Current dream car would be a new Marcos or maybe a TVR .
