ENGLISH-ASSYRIAN GLOSSARY

Based on "State Archives of Assyria"

Version 2003.1 Compiled by Marco De Odorico (marcodeo-at-inwind.it). This list of Neo-Assyrian words is rather obsolete, as I compiled it for personal use between 1994 and 1999. It does not claim to be exhaustive.

English translations stream out of SAA’s glossaries, which have been partly semplified. For instance, the incomplete terms, the names of series of texts, such as enoma anu illil, and a few other cathegories of lemmas, have been left out. The “translated” month names, Adar, Marchesvan, etc. have also been ignored. Some uncertain older translations (usually followed by a "?") have been ignored if a newer translation is available (or, the question mark is ignored if the translation is identical).

My NewRoman TR font must be installed in your system to correctly read Assyrian words and transliterations.

Numbers, whithin translations or transcriptions, refer to SAA volumes, e.g.:

dfnu, 6: DI.KUD, 4,7: dynu stands for dfnu, in SAA 6 written DI.KUD, in SAA 4 and 7 also dynu.

As for the logograms, parenthesis indicates an optional sign, and a colon one (or more) alternating signs; some exs.:

DIB.DIB,.MEC indicates DIB.DIB and DIB.MEC

(4: KUC.)MURUB4 indicates MURUB4, KUC.MURUB4 (the latter in SAA 4 only)

AN.TA-,UGU-nu indicates AN.TA-nu and UGU-nu

ITI.GUD(4:.SI.SA3) indicates ITI.GUD and ITI.GUD.SI.SA3 (in SAA 4 only)

bft rfdoti, (KUC.)É-r.,-UC(.CA3) indicates KUC.É-r.[=rfdoti], É-r., KUC.É-UC, É-UC, KUC.É-UC.CA3, É-UC.CA3

Phonetic determinatives are shown in simplified form and only if always used, thus LU2-tu [amflotu] stands for LU2-ti, LU2-ú-ti, etc.

Frequence of logograms, or of each logogram, is not indicated - however, the most common logograms are usually indicated before the rare ones. The plural sign MEC is omitted, except when always appearing with the accompanying logogram.

Volumes included:
