An interesting site - I only sampled a bit of it but will return to view the rest when able. Looks a labour of love, by a real enthusiast. Reminds me, too, of my only trip in a Dan-Air a/c from Manchester to Spain, many years ago. "AAAAH,..... De Havilland", as Roger Bacon says. Good Luck with your efforts.

How did you find my site ?: Doing research on De Havilland comet
Comments:
I have been looking for any and all information on the De Havilliand Comet 1 that crashed in Calcutta on 5/2/53, accident report, passenger lists etc. I was a passenger (8yrs) at the time on the above aircraft, coming from Rangoon, Burma. My mother was pregenant and ill, so we decided to spend the night and take a later flight the next day. For some reason I have been thinking about what happened and hoping to find some information. What I have found so far doesn't give me crash report or passenger lists, of which I would love to have. Do you have any idea how I might find this information? I know this is not what you intended this website to be, but would appreciate any additional info you might have. Sincerely, Angela Tulloh I think this idea is great and really serves a purpose for a lot of different reasons. Again Thanks

Brought back some very nice memories, I started as a flight dispatcher with Aerolineas Argentinas in New York in 1956 and we started operating the Comet 4-C in 1959 on flights from Buenos Aires to Asuncion,Port of Spain,New York, after that when the airport in Rio de Janeiro was approved for Jets, flights operated Buenos Aires,Rio de Janeiro,Por of Spain (and Havana up to 1960) then New York. The Comet was a very confortable aircraft,it had conveniences that today's aircraft do not, such as humidified cabin (I understand that in later years this was discontinued) but it's belly space was very scarse. In short it was a very good aircraft, in my opinion it was not an econoical aircraft to operate oncfe the B-707 started operations.

Very informative site! Although I listed the VC-10 as my favorite aircraft, the Comet is dear to my heart in that my father was with Imperial Air Ways, B.O.A.C., British Airways from 1936 - 1976 and so I was fortunate to fly on the Comet (4s) many times. I'm searching for classic aircraft kits of Imperial Air, B.O.A.C., to build and place in a show case as a tribute to my dad.

One treasured piece is a DH Comet 1 crew training and systems manual dated 1951, before this pioneering airliner entered service. To me as a 50's/60's airliner enthu iast it makes excellent if somewhat technical reading! Thanks for another excellent website.

One of the best aviation sites I have visited. Now, a question: Can anyone identify the three Comet 1 fuselages to be seen at Farnborough in the late 1960s? Two were cocooned in roughly the area where the radar terrace has been in recent SBAC shows. They visibly were unmodified Mk1s, with square windows visible through the cocoon material. A third, in faded BOAC markings, was in use as clubhouse of one sort or another. I have a good photograph of the cocooned fuselages taken in September 1968, along with the nose of an Avro Ashton which can be identified. I was not at the 1970 or 1972 shows, but by 1974 one fuselage was left, to be seen at the far end of Laffans Plain on the right. By 1976 it had gone.

One of the very first sites I found, and from all the comments by visitors, one of the best on the internet. Quite fascinating, and one I return to often. I flew in an Olympic Airlines Comet from Orly to Heathrow back in 1962, and many years later was giv n a maker's nameplate from a scrapped Comet, broken up at Dan Air's Lasham base.

Hey,We all gotta start somewhere!...This month marks the 90th anniversary of the yet to be "Sir" Geoffrey deHavilland's FIRST attempt at flight. After months of design, assembly, taxiing tests, and a redesigning of the gearboxes used to drive the variable p tch aluminum dual propellers,Mr.DH,without the benefit of ever having seen a plane fly before, stalled his first plane upon takeoff with too much elevator, and promply set about design of a new plane! Nine months later he was back in the air for a much long r period of time with the only original pieces from the first plane being the engine, and the pilot/designer! A few years earlier,Mr.DH had actually set out to build a competitive steam powered racecar with his older brother, until they ran out of money, and his brother Ivon died of the flu.

Comet? One word-- FABULOUS> Stratocruiser? another word-- Magic. Air Canada cabin crew of 747 would not believe me when I told them I had flown in a double decker in the year 1949. I think that all airliners are the wonder of the century. Your site is t rrific. Will be returning.

Excellent stuff but wheres the future. What many people don't see is that the Comet is the basic airframe to the Nimrod as flown by the RAF and it will continue to do so for the forseable future. It has operated as MR Mk 1 and MR Mk 2 for more than 25 y ars and is expected to continue in the form of the MRA Mk 4 well into the next century. I am interested in design faults that have caused problems that we could avoid during ongoing redesign.

Marshall,(The other guy associated with this site.),posted a question at a Olivia deHavilland "Fansite" concerning Sir Geoffrey deHavilland's relation to her. Just in case he doesn't check there often,I'll state here that he was her uncle. He says so in h s autobiography "Sky Fever". Sir Geoffrey deHavilland believed that the untimely death of two of his three sons in flying accidents also brought about a stress related death,(Cancer.),to his first wife Louie. He also stresses how dangerous the life of th early test pilot really was,and tried to instill in the reader,(As well as his sons.),a sense of resposibility to perform such tasks as safely as possible.

As an ex-Comet Captain with Dan Air Services Ltd (1975-78)I can say it is EPIC. The coverage of the Comet is second to none. When I stopped flying them in 1978, it was the end of an era. When I sit in the one at Duxford here in England, I cannot imagine how ancient it is now, but back then, it was the "Queen of the Skys". Very best wishes Marc.

I was privileged to have a ride ( London-Venice ) in a Dan Air Comet 4C out of Gatwick. It was during the 1972 French ATC strike so we spent 2+ hrs shut down on the ramp. Climbing out we experienced a small internal rain shower but it was worth the agro. I was sitting portside level with the jet nozzles. A unique experience. Sigh, those were the days. Having lived near LHR ever since I have s en pretty well all of the COMET 4s during my plane spotting days - including the ones owned by MEA that were destroyed during the 6 day conflict. Slowly but surely, these old beauties faded away into history. Pity that costs prevent enthusiast clubs from lying these like dedicated classic car owners keep their loved ones on the road. Whilst I do like the A340, there is nothing quite like the COMET or VC10. I do hope CANOPUS makes it back into the air again.

All is fine but your site looks rather like (IMHO)reference book. So I'll be very pleasant to find any service stories from the people who flew Comet and can bring some unusual facts and opinion about it. Oh, by the way, I have in my collection one original shot of Comet. It was taken in MOW in the late '50s during the visit of British officials. This is one of RAF Comet. The shot is of a high contrast but if you have any interest, I'll try to do something in the Adobe Photoshop and send it. Best wishes

Great site Marc, I was in the RAF for 13 years, servicing VC10's (Cmk1, Kmk2 & Kmk3) mostly, with a short time on HS Andover's (HS748 Cmk1 E3 & E3A). I then went to Bae building wings for the lovely A320. The Comet was possibly the most important aircraft in the history of commercial aviation, nice to see it remembered as such.

You have put down an enormous work in compiling the history of DeHavilland Comet DH 106! Especially, since I'm interrested in Technology History, and I'm a metallurgist, the mysteries behind material fatigue that so tragical was involved in the 106's fai h, have always been facinating to me. I just feel sorry that UK and DH lost the race for the passenger jets to the french and the americans, but nobody can rob DH of the glory that they was the first! Keep up the good work and thanks for some extremely good information. If you could tell me where I can find a video covering the 106's history, I would very much appreciate it! Best regards Lars

Really liked the site; full of great information. The only fault I can find is that the top image cannot be viewed properly with a 15" monitor, which may cut into your guest sign-in which is in the far right corner, and therefore unobserved. According to recent publication, 85% of all monitors are 15", so a lot of people are not enjoying your site to the fullest - as it so rightfully deserves! Best, Stephen Goodfellow

You have the best website on commercial aviation in the WORLD! No joke, there is no other as good a resource as yours. Obviously a labour of love and attention. I agree with you, the Airbus A340 is a great plane, and hopefully Ansett will purchase them or the A330's, not Boeing's. Ugh! Apparently the ex head of Cathay Pacific, Rod Eddington, who is now the CEO of Ansett, is an Airbus man! But in his experiance, the A340 is better suited to routes over 4 hours long. So perhaps Ansett will get A340 & 330. Vive Le Airbus! Cheers, Justin Chiew Melbourne, Australia
