The Miller/Johnsen Family

Original first cousins

This is a web site for the Miller/Johnsen Family, originally from Denmark, then from South Dakota. It is intended as a newsletter, and a family history. It is being kept by Marcia Miller. If you have anything you want to let the family know, contact me at www.geocities.com/[email protected].

If you have a film camera, you can send me photos, and I can scan and distribute them.

Celeste Brantolino sends news of their big move:  We are in the process of moving to North Carolina.  Joe was promoted, but it means a relocation to Hickory, North Carolina.  We have found a house in Lenior (about 18 miles from Hickory) population 16,000.  Ryan and Jake will start school on August 28th.  I am going to continue to work for American Power Conversion, as a Senior Instructional Designer, but just work "remote" from my house in NC.  It will be a big adjustment, as Joe has always lived in Rhode Island, but I am looking forward to it.

History

I have some old letters that were written to Soren and his family.  I will include others in the future.  If anyone has some old letters (already translated, please), send me copies, and I will include them.

Nov. 8

Nordby on Fano

Dear brother and sister-in-law,

Our sincerest thanks for letter and [prospekter] you have sent.  We were very happy to hear from you.  I know we haven’t written you, but how can one do his duty when one doesn’t experience anything either happy or sad news.  We don’t feel at home here and have enough to do to getting it fixed up so we can sell and get my money back.  Then I can leave this place.  Nothing to do here.  The family is in Aare and Omme.  We have this winter 2 horses and 2 cows as usual.  We had 2 teams this summer.  Greet Marius.  His sweetheart from Varde is coming to America very soon to Minneapolis.  Greet everyone from us and your wife with dear wishes from your brother

 Anders.

Yes, dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law, now I will try to fill the paper. It is so seldom we write.  Of course, the excuse is that there is nothing to write about.  And complaining isn’t interesting to read.  When, with God’s help, it will be better, we work as hard as we can.  I sew for strangers and am filled up all the time.  It all helps, but one should have more stock.  If only we could have one more cow so we could go to the creamery, then we could better have pigs, then could sell the milk privately, then do not get any for the pigs or calves.  But you know the old saying that one must crawl before one can walk.  When Anders says when he gets his money back then we will move, he doesn’t mean it – it’s when he is in a bad mood and usually he is that never just when he doesn’t have anything to do.  No way to get any place in the winter.  I suppose you have heard from the family for Christmas. We had a card from Gunderup and we were invited to Korskro 8 days before Christmas, 4 days with meals, but it is as expensive as a trip to Copenhagen if we have to rent a car from Esbjerg.  But we would like to see the children.  It has been 3 years since Johanne has been home, but it isn’t her fault.  Thought one time that Hanne was more kind disposition than we knew – or understood.  I think now she is pretty mean that she can’t see we long for our children.  We will always be thankful to her as she is good to Johanne, but since she never was a mother, she should realize our longing.  You wouldn’t know the children when you come home.  They ask when are you coming.  That would be fun to see them meet their new aunt.  Thank you again for the letter and [prospekter] and I beg of you don’t tire of writing to us.  We will try to answer more quickly.  It is always a treat to hear from you.  Wishing you a good new year.

Kristine and family
