Introduction
1.
Project Somanassa is a
long-term developmental project to provide primary healthcare to Bilin Township
in Myanmar with a population of 10,000 through the construction of a rural
medical center.
2.
The medical center was built by Sayadaw U Sandawintha, a resident monk of
the Singapore Burmese Buddhist Temple. The project was initiated by a group of
medical students in July 2001 to assist in the initial setting up and operation
of the medical center.
3.
“Somanassa” means “happiness” in Pali, an ancient Indian language
commonly used in Buddhist scriptures. Through our humble efforts to deliver
basic medical care to the people of Bilin, we hope to bring happiness to them
and in the process, we will also be able to find happiness in our hearts.
