| State highways: Numbering system per state. The two-letter state code is used. Numbers may begin with trailing zeroes.
In many states, the state highway numbering system is a copy of the federal numbering system, with the state capital as the center. In the region table, this is indicated by 'N'. In some cases, there are minor deviations.
| Other local road numbers exist only in Rio de Janeiro. | ||||||
| Road signs: Green with white text, road number shields are white with black text. | ||||||
| History:
The current system was developed by the new military regime in the 1960's, as part of a large modernization programme. The old system
only had 1- and 2-digit national road numbers.
In So Paulo all BR roads except 116, 153 and 381 were transferred to the state in the 1980's. In 1989 the northern part of Gois was split off to become the new state Tocantins. A new road numbering system was introduced in the 1990's.
