Rocket Launch Notes
What Heatseeker Missile When April 13, 2001 2:08 PM Where Civic Center Weather Mostly sunny skies, Brisk N-NW wind, temp 74 Engine A8-3 Status First Flight Other Arched Trajectory Photo None Notes We flew these rockets with my assistant Joyce, her granddaughter, Kierra, and Kierra's cousin Brandon. A good time was had by all.
This was the first flight of the Heatseeker Missile. This is an impressive looking rocket that is bright red and white and has a full set of decals that give it a real military look. This was the first flight of the afternoon.
Windy conditions dictated inclining the launcher into the wind at about 10 degrees. Kierra pressed the launch button after the all clear signal and countdown. The rocket took off and pointed into the wind, but must have hit a strong gust higher up because it flew nearly horizontal for a second or two. It appeared that it might continue its level flight or even turn down, but the low powered motor sputtered out. (Thank goodness!) The parachute deployed correctly and the wind nearly carried it into the roof of my truck. A list minute puff of wind carried it beyond that to a safe landing in soft grass.
Great first flight. Unfortunately, our first attemped launch video ended prematurely and the launch was missed.
