I've gotten started on my performance end of the work now. April 18 2008, I bought a "rebuilt" 68 350, Th350 trans, headers, dual 2 1/2" exhaust, and a double hump crossmember for $125. Well the motor has been regasketed and only has 8:1 compression, and the trans needs a rebuild but it's a starting point.
What I think I'm going to do is buy a running 403, bolt on the 68 350 "#5" heads, and do a little work on the 403 like a cam and some exhaust porting. As for the trans, I'm going to keep the th350 so I have something when the th200 that came with the car blows up. Then I'll worry about a 4 speed and all the conversion parts at my own pace. The th350 will be a strong enough trans to hold me over until I get a 4 speed. I still need a rear though. I'm leaning towards a bolt in 9" from Moser or a bolt in Dana 60 from Strange, ain't no way I'm going to blow up a Dana 60. But at a price tag of $3k for either, I'm going to need to find a used one or save up a long time.

As the pics show, it isn't a real rebuilt motor, but a back yard "redo". It looks like the cylinders got at least a hone and most likely new rings and bearings. I never heard the motor run, but I don't think I'm going to either. I'm probably going to sell the short block to fund other projects. I did still get my money's worth. I got a good set of heads, exhaust, aluminum intake, and a ton of stuff to resell. I paid $125 but I'll probably make a lot of that back on the parts I don't need. Even if I don't a set of heads is worth that, or a manifold, the exhaust is worth even more than that. I got about $500 worth of stuff, so I came out ahead in my book.
