Pirogi with cabbage


Pirogi is traditional Russian food which can be served with tea as a snack or as a main dish separately It consist of yeast dough and has a cabbage filling inside. It easy to prepare and very tasty. Please click on a picture to see it bigger.

Dough
Ingredients:

1 pint of water or milk
2 lb all purpose flour
1 tbsp of butter or oil
1 egg
1 tbsp of sugar
1 tsp of salt
1/4 oz dry yeast

Mix all ingredients together. Let it stand in warm place for 2-3 hours.
Filling
Ingredients:

1 lb of cabbage
1 tsp of salt
1 tsp of pepper
1 big fine chopped onion

Chop cabbage into small pieces. Add an onion, salt and pepper. Mix all ingredients together. Fry it on medium heat until it will be soft enough. Let it rest until heat will came out.
Take a piece of dough size 2 by 2 inches and roll it round about 5 inches in diameter. The thickness should be about quarter to half an inch.
Put a cabbage filling inside, so would be a one inch free space from each border. Start to fold loose ends from one end to another.
Take an egg yolk and put some on top of each. Place it in preheated oven, and bake on medium heat (about 350 F). It will be brown color when its ready (takes about 45 minutes).
