Top of Page Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday ¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤ I knew it couldn't last. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch, in the long run. In the short run, from time to time we can grab a free snack, but anything more than that is pretty unlikely. First my ISP, Blue Frog Net (yeah, I know! Where'd they pick THAT name?) decided that it could no longer afford to give free internet service. This Little Company That (almost) Could was about the last holdout in the free internet service provider category, at least in my neck of the woods. Sure, there are a few more regional holdouts scattered across the landscape, but this was about the last hope for me. Of course, even now they charge a ridiculously modest $25 for six months. And the two times I've called their support line, I actually spoke to a human being in less than a minute. AND the human being fixed my problem. All that free fer nuthin'! Until this week, that is. Now I have to cough up a credit card number like everybody else. *sigh* And to top it off, Computer Associates is now announcing to all InoculateIT Personal Edition users, when they run the AutoDownload tool to update their data files, that this free lunch, too, will expire forever this coming May. No more free antivirus program. One thing that I really liked about IPE, other than its freeness, was that they updated their data files extremely frequently. I checked once or twice a week, and there was always a fresh update. Free, AND current. Suh-weet! And therefore, of course, doomed. To be fair, CA, too, have a pretty reasonable offer $9.95 for current IPE users to upgrade, then $9.95 a year for future data updates. I guess I'll probably actually get this. But you'll pardon me, I'm sure if I wax nostalgic from time to time about The Good Olde Days, When Stuf Was Free... Anybody know of any good free antivirus software still out there? Not counting 30-day trialware and such, of course. |
