I'm going nuts trying to keep my Road Runner customer up and running. Two offices are running a compiled Foxpro for DOS application (I know, ugh) via pcAnywhere, connected by Road Runner. For whatever reason, they keep losing their connection. Other clients that run that app remotely just use pcAnywhere with a direct modem connection from one PC to another, and they have no problems. Alas, for these two offices, that would be a long-distance phone call, and they tend to keep the connection open during all business hours. So the $100 or so per month per office for the Road Runner connection is actually cheaper than using the phone. Or so they tell me.

So I don't know whether the dropped connections are because of unreliable Road Runner service (both offices are in a rural area, the "boonies," if that means anything), or because of some problem with pcAnywhere (version 9 works with their DOS app, where newer versions don't), or because of some obscure problem with one of the PCs. I've been trying out various replacements for pcAnywhere, to see if anything else might be more reliable.

So far I've tried TightVNC, the successor to WinVNC, which is a nifty freeware program that I use on my local network, as well as some remote sites, with good success. But with this DOS app, the screen updates are killingly slow, even with maximum data compression. No good. Then I tried Computer Associates ControlIT, since as a channel partner, I have a demo version in hand. Again, it works fine over my network, but I can't get it to connect successfully over the web. And it has an ugly, non-intuitive, geeks-only interface, as well. Not good for typical office end users. Another loser. And their website stinques, too. Nyah! So now I guess I'll try to dig up a copy of LapLink from somewhere, and give that a shot. Argh! Suggestions welcome, as always...

Oh, you know what I mean. And don't look at me in that tone of voice.
